Diversify into vegetables, fruits: farm expert

There is an imperative need to come out of paddy-wheat rotation and diversify to vegetables and fruit production in order to save the precious natural resources and soil health in the state.

This was emphasised here today by former consultant to FAO-IAEA Vienna, Austria, Dr B.S.Ahloowalia, while delivering a lecture on "Indian agriculture: the challenge to sustain production and enhance quality" under the auspices of PAU Science Club.

Dr Ahloowalia talked of tremendous opportunities to export organically grown fruits and vegetables. He emphasized on efficient management of land, labour and water resources; adoption of low-cost technologies; contract farming;re-orientation of processing, marketing, education and extension activities with a focus to provide rural employment; production and distribution of high quality seeds etc.

The Dean, Postgraduate Studies, and Chairman, PAU Science Club, Dr S.S.Chahal, presided over the function. He called for favourable government policies, adoption of low-cost technologies, value addition, seed distribution, agri-business/agri-marketing for successful diversification of agriculture. He stressed on sustainability of agriculture and identified major challenges facing agriculture.

Extention lecture on ‘Gramsci’ organised

The Political Science Association of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, organised an extension lecture on the topic, “Political Ideas of Gramsci” at the college seminar hall. The lecture began with a welcome address by Dr Kuldip Singh and Mr Jaswant Singh Gill, Director of the college.

Mr Harbhajan Singh Deol, a renowned scholar, was the resource person. He highlighted the various aspects of Gramsci’s personality. He threw light upon the different contributions made by Gramsci in the field of political science. He enriched the knowledge of the students regarding Gramsci in depth. He described it as the lesser known, fecund mind and original Marxist thinker of the 20th century, born in Italy, who joined socialist party in 1913, was greatly influenced by the ideas of Hegel, Croce and Sorel. He stressed on the role of culture and art in social life. He did not believe in the process of waiting when all segments of social life rejected the statuesquo.

He rejected Bukharam’s historical materialism. His opposition to positivism was his dialectic response within the Marxist movement and it was never influenced by anti-Marxist ideas.

Mr Deol further added Gramsci’s views about trade unions and factory councils.

Gramsci‘s concept of hegemony was also discussed. He introduced spirit of consent and coercion, persuasion and force, dominance and authority. Gramsci contended that the working class must become hegemonic class by organising all other classes, interests, social forces and must lead a united front of broad masses under its own image. Gramsci’s idea of Hegemony gained enormous popularity in 1968 in France and brought De Gaulle down to knees. According to Dr Deol Indian Leftists miserably failed to create worker Hegemony in J.P.’s upsurge.

Lastly, Mr. Deol concluded his lecture by explaining Gramsci’s views on role of intellectuals. Bourgeois state , civil Society and capitalist productive process were controlled by intellectuals.

The students of M.A.I and II of political science actively participated in the lecture by asking various questions in the interaction session.

In the end, vote of thanks was given by Prof B.S.Pangali, General Secretary of college managing committee. Among others who were present were Dr Narinder Singh Sidhu, Principal of the college, teacher leader Mr Harnek Singh Sarabha, Retired engineer, Mr Grewal, Mr Hukam Singh, NRI, Prof Gursharnjit Singh, Head of the Postgraduate Department of Commerce , Prof Gursharan Kaur Head of the Postgraduate Department of Political Science, Dr Kuldeep Singh, Prof Tejinder Kaur and Prof Upasna Kaushal.

Annual day celebrations at Guru Nanak Public School

Ludhiana December 4
The annual day function of nursery and primary Sections of Guru Nanak Public School (G.N.P.S), Sarabha Nagar, was celebrated here today. The tiny tots of the school in their colourful attires presented a show which was appreciated by one and all.

Mr Jasbir Singh, president, Mr Surinder Singh, general secretary and Mr Ranjodh Singh, treasurer, School Managing Committee, were the guests of honour and they gave away the prizes to the winners. The programme started with a shabad gayan by primary section students. They also presented solo songs. The items which were presented by the students of LKG to Class I were Rajasthani dance, balanced diet colours, fairy song, English play etc. The Punjabi folk dance- Bhangra, was enjoyed by all. Mr R.S.Gill, the Principal of the school, delivered the vote of thanks.

Outstanding results

The results of common proficiency test (CPT) i.e. C.A. entrance examination held on November 12, 2006, were declared here recently in which four students of ABC Tutorials got All-India ranks. The entrance examinations was held at the All-India level.

According to a press note issued here, Heena Dhir got 180 out of 200 marks and scored 14th rank in India. Akshay Jain with 178 marks got 16th rank while Palki Kapoor got 27th and Nidhi Verma got 29th rank by scoring 167 and 165 marks respectively.

Annual prize distribution

Shivalikwala Doon School celebrated its annual function with great enthusiasm here today. Prizes were given for academics as well as for other activities by the chief guest, Mr Maheshinder Singh Grewal, former Cabinet Minister, Punjab. Mr Grewal encouraged the students to march forward with strength of love and unity. He applauded the girl child's vision. The theme of this function was 'Mahan Bharat Ka Uday'.The programme was based on female foetcide.

Girl students requested parents and public to "let them also live". Mr Ashok Kumar Setia, Director New Senior Secondary School, who presided over the function, told the students to keep the torch alighted. All this was made possible by the efforts of the staff members, the Principal and the Vice-Principal of the school. The cooperation by the parents and the guests was also appreciated.

Training, placement workshop

In accordance with the call given by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to make the nation a developed country by 2020, the Khalsa Institute of Management and Technology (KIMT) for Women here organised a training and placement workshop for the final year students of MCA and M.Sc. (IT) today. Dr R.S. Gupta, Director, in a press note issued here said SLR Infotech, a California-based software development and exports company engaged in providing industrial training and placements for the corporate world conducted the workshop titled 'Industrial training to complement academic knowledge'

Ms Seema Sharma, Head of the training division, apprised the significance of 'right kind of industrial training' to the passing-out students. She said the aim of industrial training was to facilitate students with live projects on in-demand technologies under the guidance of industry experts. Briefing about the company profile, she told that SLR Infotech was a customer-focused company working to provide software solutions, which were delivered with reliability, timeliness, flexibility and low-cost customer satisfaction as the primary aim.

She said the students could choose from one of the areas of interest and then concentrate on gaining certification from the parent company which would give them an edge over the others. She also said the industry had an immediate requirement of NET and J2EE technologies. Ms Mona Gupta and Mr Ankur Rampal assured students to provide six-months industrial training on live projects and subsequent placements in the client companies.

Science paper reading contest

Scientific aptitude, logical reasoning and systematic working must be developed at the right age. Keeping this in mind, an inter-class science paper reading contest was organised for the primary section students of Kundan Vidya Mandir here today.

The participants expressed their views on informative topics such as 'shrinking world', 'decreasing forest cover', 'health and happiness', 'air pollution' etc. Among Class III students, first prize was won by Anjali Jain whereas the second and third prize were given to Harshit Karir and Diksha Jain respectively. The appreciation prize was given to Mantej. In Class IV, the prize winners were Avi Arora, Sakshay Bhatia and Ghazal Jain. The function was presided over by the school Principal MrS.C.Saxena. Ms Namita Raj Singh, Headmistress of City School, and In charges of all sections was also present. While giving away the prizes, the Principal congratulated the prize winners and appreciated the teachers and participants for their efforts in developing scientific temper among students.

NCC Day celebrated

The NCC Day was celebrated at Khalsa Girls Senior School here today.Various competitions, including essay writing and painting, were organised on this occasion. Priya Sidhu of Class IX stood first while Manisha and Sakshi were declared second and third respectively. In painting competition, the winners were Jaspreet Kaur, Harpreet Kaur and Renu. The Principal, Ms Inderjit Kaur Bedi, highlighted the importance of NCC. She advised cadets to remain united and keep discipline. Ms Amarjit Kaur, NCC in charge, arranged the event.

GGN Khalsa college organises Science Fair

The Science Fair 2006 was organized here today by the Young Scientists’ Association of GGN Khalsa College. Sixty participants of different institutes, college and schools took part in the fair which consisted of a recitation, quiz and poster-making competitions. These competitions were based on a variety of topics, such as drug abuse, foods and nutrition, transport and communication, industry and environmental protection etc.

The fair was inaugurated by Mr Harminder Singh, Joint Secretary of Khalsa Educational Council . Prof Prithipal Singh Kapur, former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, appreciated the initiative of the members of the Young Scientists’ Association.

Birpal and Anila from BCM College of Education stood first in the quiz competition, Karmandeep and Biran Rajdev of DAV Public School (second) and students from GNI Public School and SCD Govt College came third.

In the recitation contest, Sukhdeep Kaur BCM College of Education stood first, Purba Dhawan, BCM Senior Secondary School (second )while Vipondeep Kaur of GHG Khalsa College of Education, Guru Sar Sudhar got third and Karan of GNT Public School bagged the special prize.

Prize winners of poster-making contest were Tejinderpal Singh of GGN Khalsa College of Pharmacy- first, Liya Handa of BCM College of Education second and Charag Jain of DAV Public School got third prize. Deepjot of Guru Nanak Khalsa College of Women won the special prize.

Dr Balbir Singh Pannu of Punjab Agricultural University, Dr S S Rath of GADVASU, Dr SS Sethi and Prof R.K.Chabra helped in judging the prize winners. The Principal, Tarlochan Singh thanked the participants and encouraged the organisers to continue in their endeavour.s

Latest knowhow on water management to be discussed

Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI), situated at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) campus, is organising a national training programme on conjunctive use of surface and ground water, including use of brackish water, sponsored by the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India.

The objectives are to impart training for the benefit of senior-level officers of the water resources and irrigation department of the Central as well as the state government. It is for the officers who are responsible for the implementation of Command Area Development (CAD) programmes, and to provide latest technical knowhow to manage land water resources for sustainable development.

Dr S.P.S. Brar, Director, PAMETI, inaugurated the six-day training programme. During his discussion, about the objectives of CAD Programme with the trainees. Dr Brar said CAD programme was included to bridge the gap between the irrigation potential created and utilised and efficient water management apart from bringing improvement in socio-economic condition of the farmer.

Advocates oppose demand to postpone construction work

The Group of Friends Advocates today opposed the demand raised by a section of lawyers to postpone the process of start of construction work for the Lawyers Chamber Complex Part-II.

The president of the Group of Friends Advocates,Mr Naginder Singh, chairman Parminder Singh, and other office-bearers said certain supporters of one candidate for the post of President were intentionally sabotaging the project for their personal goals.

They claimed that the young lawyers were eagerly waiting for the start of construction work for the chamber complex, but unfortunately some of our colleagues playing politics over this issue.These lawyers never wanted the dream of young lawyers to be fulfilled but only wanted to remain it a 'burning issue' for the DBA elections.

Previous year, these lawyers had performed ' Bhoomi Poojan' with the claim that the construction work for the chambers complex was going to start soon. Even temporary structures were built for the labourers, who were to start construction but the construction never started, added Mr Parminder Singh.

He said that if the present executive team of the DBA wanted to start the construction work, why they were so much disturbed. The High Court had already ordered the shifting of the malkhana. The necessary formalities had already been completed by the Bar President and the construction work was likely to start soon, added Mr Parminder.
