Dalit groups lose cool Jalandhar, December 6 The event, organised on the ocassion of Nirvan divas of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, resulted in flaring up of tempers with Mr. Karimpuri’s supporters, particularly, Mr. Raj Kumar Hans (Mahlo), opposing the move and shouting slogans against Mr. Tinu. However, intervention by police officials calmed the two groups, led by Mr. Tinu and Mr. Hans. Both the leaders garlanded the statue of Dr. Ambedkar and paid tributes to the Dalit leader . Mr. Tinu and supporters, such as, Mr. Amarjit Sidhu, were shunted out of the BSP as they had refused to toe the line of Ms. Mayawati and Mr. Karimpuri, who, wanted that the BSP should go ahead all on its own for the forthcoming Assembly polls in Punjab. Mr. Tinu and his supporters, who have their stronghold in Jalandhar, were of the view that the BSP must forge an alliance and seize power for the uplift of Dalits in Punjab. They had also shared their sentiments at different platforms. Their open assertions, however, were not digested by Ms. Mayawati and Mr. Karimpuri and they were thrown out of the party on the very next day of the BSP’s “Nirnayak Bano Maharally” at Tajpur near Jalandhar on November 30. Mr. Tinu and his supporters, who, pitched their tents at Dr. Amedkar Chowk criticized Mr. Karimpuri and state BSP leadership. Mr. Tinu and Mr. Amarjit Sidhu asserted that they would expose the BSP’s state leadership, particularly, Mr. Karimpuri and his “anti Dalit”policies. They alleged that Dalits were deceived by the BSP’s state leadership and hence, Dalits would be urged to boycott Mr. Karimpuri and other BSP leaders. Mr. Ramesh Chohkan, the Secretary of the Bahujan Samaj Morcha (BSM) and Mr. Shingara Ram Sahugara, a former MLA from Garshankar, also supported Mr. Tinu. |

One more debate over delay in MC projects Jalandhar, December 6 The angry Opposition members called for immediate cancellation of the BOT project and removal of all hoardings erected on the footpaths by an advertising company. They demanded that the company be asked to wind up its operations in case it had been found that it was a defaulter or was not abiding by the agreement. The Mayor, Mr Surinder Mahey, and the Commissioner, Mr S.S. Johl, said that the contract was helping the MC get funds to the tune of Rs 32 crore. They said that an amount of Rs 1.21 crore had already been received from the company. They said that the company had erected only 147 of the total 550 hoardings. Mr Kishan Dev Bhandari, leader of the Opposition, demanded an explanation over delay in projects, including railway over-bridge near Domoria Pull, Model Town parking, parking complex near Narinder Cinema, Solid Waste Treatment Plant and Fish Market. Mr Johl replied that the project on Domoria Pull was 90 per cent complete and the delay had been due to long time taken by the Railways to clear the maps. An advance payment of Rs 1 crore from the Punjab government had been received. The drawings had been accepted. It should not take more than two months to accomplish the task. Over the issue of waste treatment plant at Wariana village, the commissioner replied that the main problem was of marketing manure. Samples had been sent to PAU for testing. He said that he was told that it would take at least three years to present a report. He also said that he had sent a legal notice to Mr R.K. Ghai, contractor of the plant, for not running it properly. He said that he had later even sent him a notice to vacate the area and stop running the plant. Mr Johl added that there was a plan to set up a plant at 25 acre in Jamsher. He had held a meeting with the Local Bodies Minister at Chandigarh a fortnight back .The MC has been asked to acquire another 20 acre near the site. About the Fish Market, Mr Johl said that the matter had been taken to court and stay had just been vacated. He said that it was being planned that a commercial complex or a parking lot be constructed in the prime location and Fish Market be shifted to another location. |
