Chandigarh, December 8
A live demonstration on knee surgery was given by Dr Dave Pollock, an orthopedic surgeon from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Carolina, USA, and Dr S.S. Gill, Head of Department, orthopedics, PGIMER, at the PGI, here today. An intelligent knee surgery course is being conducted here.

It has been organised to enhance orthopaedician’s skills. the latest technological advancements and improved implants, providing more degree of flexion in knee joints, are being used.

According to Dr Pollock, the degree flexion, and ones range of motion affects the activities of a normal arthritic patient. “Patients who expect to return to activities such as gardening, kneeling for prayers or sitting on the floor cross-legged, squatting and yoga require upto 130-150 degrees of flexion from RP-F implants that offers 155 degree of flexion,” he claimed. Dr Pollock also claimed that the workshop would benefit delegates in sharing experiences and ideas.

Dr Gill, along with Dr Pollock performed a live knee replacement surgery using a high end implant rotating platform high flexion knee (RP-F).

“The course is devised to share clinical knowledge and experience through a series of live surgeries. Our ultimate goal is to offer all interested surgeons of Punjab an experience of less and minimally invasive surgery using dedicated instrumentation for joint replacement surgeries,” Dr Gill said.

Other eminent surgeons present during the live surgery were Dr Manuj Wadhwa, a Senior consultant, Fortis, Chandigarh, and Dr S Mahajan, a senior consultant, DMC, Ludhiana.

Talks fail with PGIMER head

Chandigarh, December 8
A meeting of the PGI Medical Technologists’ Association with the PGIMER Director today failed to serve the purpose here.

Earlier, the association had served a notice to the Director for one-day mass casual leave to press their pending demands.

The notices have been sent under Section 22(i) (b) of the Industrial Dispute Act, 1947, in which the association has informed Prof K.K. Talwar that it will be on mass casual leave on December 18 in protest against the administration attitude as it has not fulfilled their demands even after nine months of assurance.

Mr Dev Raj Chumber and Mr Ashwani Munjal, president and general secretary of the association, respectively, in a join statement said the association had been asking the management to sort out their problems.

Meanwhile, the PGI Employees Union, Chandigarh (Group B, C and D), has also given an ultimatum for chain hunger strike from January 3 onwards.

Good news for diabetics

Chandigarh, December 8
To provide medicare to diabetic patients under a single roof, Oxford Hospital, Chandigarh, launched a club “Diabetes Platinum Club” in the city with registration of a couple of members.

The hospital authorities have constituted a core team of consultants from different specialties and put them on club-panel.

As many as 500 patients would be registered on first come first serve basis at the initial stage.

All patients would be issued “Diabetes Platinum Card” on registration.

“Our endeavor to provide a life-long solution for them via the club. Hence, our aim to provide comprehensive and cost effective care to the patients by the specialists working under one roof, has been the reason of setting up,” he added.

DAV Centre defeat SA Club by 130 runs

Chandigarh, December 8
A fine knock of 81 runs off 91 balls, ably supported by Sumit who contributed a quick fire 76 off 83 balls, enabled the DAV College Centre of Cricket Excellence beat the South Africa Alberton Cricket Club U-17 team in the second match of the tour held at DAV College, Sector 10, here today.

Winning the toss, the Indian side elected to bat first and made a respectable 257 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 40 overs. The openers had a 150-run partnership and the score read 151 for the loss of 1 wicket in 24 overs. Saket Nandal also made an unbeaten 20 off 24 balls. Mark Lee and Reyneke Wihan were the most successful bowlers for the South African team, picking up 2 wickets each for their team while giving away 46 and 37 runs, respectively.

The South African side got off to a bad start and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Suyash Kumar was the star bowler for the Indian side picking up 3 scalps for just 26 runs in 8 overs. Sumit and Yuvraj Anand also picked up 3 wickets each for 29 and 19 runs, respectively. Potgieter Jundre was the top scorer for the South African side with 38 runs in 47 balls with five hits to the fence and a six. The Indian side won the match by 130 runs.

Meanwhile, junior boys beat the South African side in an impromptu football match organised for fun right after the cricket match 2-0. The suggestion for the fun match came from the South African side, which was readily accepted.

Overall trophy for Southern Command

PCDA (Southern Command), Pune, bagged the overall trophy by securing 43 points in the three-day All-India Defence Accounts Department Athletics Meet -2006 which concluded at Sector 7 Sports Complex here today.

The final event of 4x100 m was won by PCDA (P), Allahabad, and followed by CDA, Jabalpur.

The Additional Controller General of Defence Accounts, H.K. Pannu, declared the meet closed.

Himachal beat AP in cricket

Himachal Pradesh defeated Andhra Pradesh by scoring required 127 runs in 15 overs with the loss of one wicket to secure a bearth in the semifinals on the second day of the All India Cricket Tournament for Mentally Challenged Children being played here today.

Anup and Ajay of Himachal scored 24 and 23 runs, respectively. Sri Kanth of AP was declared the man of the match who took 5 wickets.

Meanwhile, Haryana and Chandigarh defeated their opponents Punjab and Bihar, respectively, to make a place in the semifinals. Maharashtra has already entered the semifinals.

KCC win kabaddi title

Kabaddi Coaching Centre, (Sector 42), defeated Sikhya, (Sector 46), by 9 points to win the Sub Junior Championship title in the State Kabaddi Championship, which concluded here at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, today.

Mr Terlochan Singh, Jan Morcha President, conferred the prizes to the winners.

Sub junior boys: KCC-2 b Sikhya (9 points)

Sub junior girls: Dhanas Club b Sikhya (6 points)

Junior boys: KCC b Dhanas Club (16 points)
