Army court disallows witnesses
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 16
The general court-martial (GCM), re-assembled to consider the sentence awarded to two Army personnel in a weapons loss case, today denied permission to the defence to produce witnesses in support of its contention.

The GCM, being held at Ferozepore, had earlier acquitted Naib Sub Madan Lal and Hav Krishan Kumar of an artillery unit of all seven charges faced by them.

Defence counsel Col S.K. Aggarwal (retd) said despite advice rendered by the judge advocate that the defence was fully entitled to produce and examine witnesses, the court overruled its plea.

In his re-assembling order, General Officer Commanding 7 Infantry Division Maj Gen Mahavir Singh had stated that the court had given strange logic on finding the accused persons not guilty and that in his opinion, the accused persons were guilty of all seven charges.

He had also directed the court to examine three specific persons as court witnesses.

Challenging the order as illegal, Colonel Aggarwal said the order revealed prejudice on part of the convening authority.

He also contended that two of the persons mentioned in the order to be examined had deposed as prosecution witnesses instead of court witnesses even though the prosecution had not asked to examine new witnesses. This, he added, amounted to a fresh trial.

He further contended that if the prosecution could examine new witnesses, this gave an equal right to the defence to call more witnesses.

He said he had submitted a list of 10 defence witnesses and six documents to be produced in court, but it was overruled.

After confusion, show picks up
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 16
The second day of the Chandigarh film festival started out amidst confusion, with one of the hot favourites—Dance like a Man— nowhere on screen. Scheduled for a morning performance today, the film was not shown, much to the displeasure of visitors, who had no idea of the technical problem that had arisen at the last minute.

Senior officials at Fun Republic told Chandigarh Tribune that “Dance like a Man” had to be swapped with “Cloud and Wind”, which was originally slotted for screening on Sunday evening. But it was shown this morning in place of “Dance like a Man”.

“The prints of “Cloud and Wind” have to be sent back due to some technical reason. Normally, we don't take such last minute requests but it was urgent. Now we will screen “Dance like a Man” tomorrow evening,” said senior vice-president of Fun Republic Mr J.S. Jolly.

Due to the confusion, the mornings show did not do so well. Later, Fun Republic officials said the shows picked up towards the afternoon and the occupancy rose up to about 50 per cent of the capacity. Today's sell-out was “Lage Raho Munnabhai”. Not a single ticket of this show was left.

Tomorrow's shows are scheduled as usual — Suraj Ka Saatwan Ghoda; 9.30 am; Little Vilma; 12.30 pm; Veer-Zaara; 3 pm. Dance like a Man and Les Mauvais Joueurs will be screened in the evening.

Sudesh Bhonsle, Big B’s voice
Smriti Sharma
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 16
His surname often makes people relate him to legendary Asha Bhonsle, but that doesn’t make Sudesh Bhonsle any less a singer.
On the contrary, the only similarity between Asha Bhonsle and him, is Goa, their common place of origin. Nevertheless, for someone who has been singing for the past 25 years for films and performing live shows, the comparison is definitely an honour.

But the real comparison that got him recognition as a singer was when he sang in a voice matching that of Amitabh Bachchan. Not even Big B could believe his ears when he heard the song. Finally, it was film “Ajooba”, directed by Shashi Kapoor, which made him a known singer who could sing exactly in Amitabh’s voice.

Sudesh Bhonsle, who was here today, spoke at length about his career and life.

A singer, painter and mimicry artiste, he is a jack of all trades. He started his career as a painter at the age of 14 and even painted banners and hoardings for films like “Julie”. Sudesh also happened to imitate the styles of many Bollywood personalities of that time, including Ashok Kumar, Jagdeep, Sanjeev Kumar, Rajkumar and Asrani.

Little did he know that the mimicry he did for laughs would one day fetch him big assignments in Bollywood, a fact that he both regrets and feels content about.

“Many singers can only dream of singing for Amit ji. To be accepted by him is a big thing in itself,” he says.

However, it also restricts his chances of singing in his own voice, he says. Perhaps this is one of the main reasons that many of his own singing projects could never take off, as the producers would tell him to imitate someone else’s voice. He believes there are no shortcuts to success and the initial struggle that goes into the making of an artiste is like going to a school.

His earnest desire is to sing as long as he lives. His forthcoming ventures are “Zamanat” wherein he gets to sing for Amitabh Bachchan once again and “Bhootnath” starring Mithun Chakraborty.

Later at night, he gave a performance at the first-ever film festival being organised in the ciy.
