Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has mourned the demise of Rajya Sabha member Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder.
Mrs Bhinder who breathed her last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Friday, was cremated at the Lodhi crematorium here today. Former Home Minister Buta Singh and Chief Ministers of Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, were among
those present at the cremation.
In a condolence message, the PM said in Mrs Bhinder's
"unfortunate passing away, the country had lost a leader with a long and rich experience in public life and a commitment to secular values of our
Republic.''
He said Mrs Bhinder had a distinguished record of service as an agriculturist, social worker, member of Parliament and administrator. Dr Singh said her
election to the Lok Sabha for five terms was a testimony of her popularity.
The Prime Minister further said he had the good fortune of working with Mrs Bhinder in the Rajya Sabha.
Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh told mediapersons that Mrs Bhinder was a seasoned politician with qualities of the head and the heart and she played a pivotal role in the overall development of the state.
