123 cadets from region to take part in R-Day camp

Chandigarh, December 26
As many as 123 cadets have been selected to represent Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh NCC Directorate at the Republic Day Camp - 2007, which commences in New Delhi next month.

Cadets from all over the country will be attending the camp and competing in various events.

The selected cadets underwent a rigorous training camp on the Air Force Station High Grounds here, which had started on December 9. The concluding function and a camp fire were held today. The cadets presented a cultural programme and a national integration presentation. They will also be showcasing these at the camp in Delhi.

The Deputy Director General NCC, Brig D.C. Katoch, who has been supervising the preparations, said the NCC was now laying more stress on sports activities and to accommodate more sports competitions and events some cultural items had been done away with.

He added that the state governments had also been generous in providing financial assistance to provide dress, mufti and other paraphernalia for the cadets and also to undertake training activities.

Brig Katoch also gave away prizes for outstanding performance during training activities and sports competitions. Chandigarh bagged the trophy for the best air squadron as well as the best naval unit in the directorate.

Shimla bagged the trophy for the best group in drill, while Amritsar group was declared best in cultural activities as well as in aero-modelling. Among girls, the trophy for basketball went to Amritsar and that for cross country went to Jalandhar. Among boys, the trophies were bagged by Chandigarh and Rohtak.

Talk on RTI Act

A talk on “One Year of Right to Information: The Punjab Experience” was delivered today by Mr Rajan Kashyap, Chief Information Commissioner, Punjab, at the CIL auditorium, Punjab University, Chandigarh.

The programme was presided over by Prof R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, and was attended by participants of various refresher courses organised by the Academic Staff College, Punjab University.

In his address, Mr Kashyap elucidated varied facets of the Right to Information Act, 2005, with a special focus on the Punjabi experiences with the Act.

Thakurs regale audience

The serenity of Sufiana spirit, intoxicating romance of ghazals and vigour of folklore reverberated the Plaza ambiance as the husband-wife duo of Delhi-based vocalists Sadaa Thakur and Masoom Thakur cast a spell here today. The musical performance gave a grandiose start to the New Year festivities being organised by the Chandigarh Tourism and the Centre for Carnival Arts with the Tribune group of newspapers as the media sponsor.

The duo commenced the programme with ghazal “Dil gya tumne liya” from their latest seventh album “Diwani Kar Dini” which melted into “Ham tere shehar mein” amidst applause from the crowd.

Later, they doled out some popular numbers.

Udit Narayan to perform in city

Music lovers of the city can enjoy melodies of the famous Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan, at Leisure Valley, Sector 10, on December 29.

More than 4000 seats will be available. Complimentary passes will be distributed at a first-cum-first-serve basis.
