Rakesh Mohindra, Charanjit Kaur win cycle race

Chandigarh, December 30
Rakesh Mohindra and Charanjit Kaur won the top positions in the cycle race in the men’s and women’s sections, respectively, in the Prize Money Cycle Races at Sukhna Lake, here today.

As many as 58 cyclists, in the men’s category, pedaled a distance of 20 kilometre. Only 38 participants completed the race. In the women’s category, 18 persons took part in the 10 kilometre race.

Mr S. K. Sandhu, Chandigarh Finance-cum-Sports Secretary, gave away the prizes. The winners in each group were given a cash award of Rs 5,000, runners-up Rs 3000 and third position holders received Rs 2000 each. The race was organized by the Chandigarh Sports Department.

Also present on the occasion were Sports Director-cum-Additional Deputy Commissioner, Inderjit Singh Sandhu, and Joint Director, Dr J.P.S. Sidhu.

Results:

Men (20 km): 1 Rakesh Mohindra 37:12.00; 2 Kamaldeep Singh 37:35.00; Sanjeev Pathania 40:38.00; 4 Rajeev Sundera 40:43.1; 5 Amrik Singh 40:46.7; 6 Satinder Singh 40:53.2; 7 Sada Ram and 8 Surinder Cheema.

Amrik Singh (40:46.7 sec) was awarded the consolation prize.

Women (10 km): 1 Charanjit Kaur 22:08.7; 2 Sunita Malik 23:32.5; 3 Anita Khullar 24:19.6; 4 Meenu Mahindra 24:38.54; 5 Sukhesha Gosain 25:14.00; 6 Gurdeep Kaur 25:15.7; 7 Kamlesh Kalra and 8 Satbir Kaur. Gurdeep Kaur (25:15.7) was given the consolation prize.

Chote Lal punches down Dalbir

Chote Lal (ASI) thrashed Dalbir (Chd-B) 23-9 in the featherweight category on the final day of the 14th All-India Invitation A.K. Mishra Memorial Boxing Championship. The meet was organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association at Sector 10 Skating Rink, here.

Meanwhile, as many as 10 former boxers who represented Chandigarh in the 80s were also honoured for their valuable contribution to boxing. They were: Harjinder Pal Singh, Ranbir Singh, Dalbir Singh, Ravi Katoch, Devinder Negi, Devinder Singh, Parmod Negi, Sanjeev Kumar, Charanjit Singh and Ashwani Kumar.

Neelam, Kuldeep clinch Press Club badminton cups

Neelam Sharma (Indian Express) came from behind to lift the women’s singles trophy beating Veena Ahuja (Indian Express) 0-15, 15-13, 15-8 in the Airtel-Chandigarh Press Club Inter-Media Badminton Tournament concluded at Sports Complex, Sector 42 here today.

In men’s singles, Kuldeep Singh (Sky Hawk) won the top honours thrashing Gautam Dhir (Indian Express) 15-0, 15-2. The tournament was organised by the Chandigarh Press Club in association with Airtel.

The other results are as follows:

Women's singles (final): Neelam Sharma b Veena Ahuja 0-15, 15-13, 15-8.

CRPF lifts police shooting trophy

Chandigarh, December 30
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) shooting team bagged the overall trophy in the All-India Police Duty Meet Shooting, which concluded at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force Basic Training Centre at Bhanu near here today. The Border Security Force Team came in second.

As many as 760 competitors from the paramilitary, Central police organisations and state forces took part in 15 events during the meet. They displayed their skill-at-arms with service weapons, including the pistol, carbine and rifle at a specially constructed electro-mechanical range.

The closing ceremony was presided over by Additional Director-General, BSF, Mr N.P.S. Aulakh. Th meet was declared closed by the Joint Director, Intelligence Bureau, Mr K.S. Bains.

The results, in the order of merit, are:

Rifle shooting : BSF; CRPF;

Pistol shooting : Assam Rifles; ITBP;

Carbine shooting : CRPF; BSF;

Best state police team : Andhra Pradesh.

Gurmot beats Russian rival in ITF tennis tourney

Local lad Gurmot Singh Janjua fought hard to beat his Russian rival Artur Khayretdinov of Russia 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the qualifying round of the boys’ singles in the ITF Junior Tennis (Group 3) Tournament at the CLTA Stadium, Sector 10, here today.

The other Chandigarhian Harry Singh Amor too, moved to th next round after defeating Maxim Prosolov, also from Russia 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-0 in a well contested match.

Earlier, Gurmohit had staged a brilliant comeback after losing the first set 1-6. Displaying a good show of volleys, he made his opponent kneel down in the next two sets 6-4, 6-1.

Another Russian Rasim Magafurov could not face the wrath of Deepinder Singh Bains and gave away the game 6-0, 6-0.

Sagar beats Mandeep in snooker

Chandigarh, December 30
Sagar won the inaugural match against Mandeep Makkar 39-57, 69-45, 67-44, 40-51 and 67-43 during the 23 rd Chaudhary Vishnu Pal Memorial Chandigarh State Snooker championship. The championship was held at the Chandigarh Billiards Coaching Centre, Sector 20, here, today.

Makkar started well in the first frame with a break of 26 points and pocketed the first frame 57-39. Sagar bounced back and grabbed the next two frames 69-45, 67-44. In the fourth frame, Makkar showed excellent cue ball control and made the score 2-2 by winning the frame 51-40. But in the deciding frame, it was Sagar’s day and he won the frame 67-43 and won the match.

In the second match, eight seed Parmod Kumar was too good for his opponent Rahul Gupta. Parmod defeated Rahul with ease 3-0 ( 68-45, 57-53, 50-28).

Three SHOs transferred

Mohali, December 30
Three SHOs have been transferred in the district while one has been given the regular charge of a police station.

Stating this here, the SSP, Mr G.S. Dhillon, said the orders in this regard were issued last evening. They took charge today.

The SHO of the Phase I police station here , Mr Rajinder Singh Sohal, has been made the in charge of the community policing scheme. He has been replaced by Mr Gurvinder Singh. Mr Baldev Singh, Additional SHO, Phase VIII police station here, has been given the charge of the same police station.

Mr Kulwinder Singh and Mr Navdeep Singh, posted in Kurali and Dera Bassi, respectively, have been ordered to swap places.
