Every time as the year draws to a close, and the dawn of a new year approaches I wish many wonderful things for my country, prosperity and good health of my family and friends. But as the year passes, I realise that half of my good wishes are not fulfilled. That makes me wonder whether my wishes lack sincerity or whether the prevailing conditions in our country stall the progress we are all hoping for.

But all my wishes don’t go waste. Some of my friends do thank me for wishing them. Some of them call and say, “Bhaji, my son has been acquitted in a dowry case,” or “ Bhaji, I received huge bribes this year and it’s all because you wished me sincerely!” Laloo Prasad Yadav has been acquitted in the disproportionate wealth case. Maybe his friends have also wished him with utmost sincerity.

At the year end, the Courts have delivered historic sentences in some long- drawn out cases. The public for the first time is looking with greater faith at the judiciary. I hope that in the next year whether it is Manu or Mattoo, Shibu or Sidhu, Munnabhai or some other bhai, justice should prevail for India to breathe more easily.

Once a judge was scolding a thief who was a habitual offender. “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself? Don’t you know how many times you have been brought before me?” The criminal replied innocently, “Sir, I don’t know. I thought you must be keeping a record!”
