Workshop on AIDS for nodal teachers

A four-day AIDS Education Workshop was organised by the DEO Ludhiana at Swami Roop Chand Jain School here under the guidelines of the NACO, New Delhi, PSACS and SISE Punjab.

In this workshop, inaugurated by Trishala Jain, school Principal, Tarsem Lal Banga, Principal, DIET, Jagraon, and Dr Ashok Sharma, around 150 women and men nodal teachers and 150 adolescent students from school of tehsil of Jagraon, Raikot participated.

In the technical session of Day 1, state AIDS resource person Prof Baldev Singh of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Jagraon, delivered an lectures on various stages of development among adolescent boys and girls.

On Day 2, Dr Roop Dass, SMO, Civil Hospital, Hathoor, talked about the sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and reproductive tract infections (RITs).

Prof Baldev Singh, Dr Radha Goyal, SMO, Civil Hospital, Jagraon, and Dr Kuldip Singh explained the origin, history, growth, symptoms, routes of spread of AIDS, as blood transfusion, use of unsafe injections, from infected mother to the new born child and unsafe sex, responsible for about 87 per cent spread of AIDS all over the world.

They said with the attack of the HIV, white blood cells, responsible for body’s immunity, collaborated with this virus. As a result, immune system deteriorated, opportunistic diseases attacked the patient, leading him/ her to death.

On Day3, participants prepared transparencies regarding AIDS routes, HIV structure and no-risk behavior.

Under the direction of Prof Baldev Singh, participants presented group discussion on commercial sex workers, child abuse and child marriage, homosexuality, masturbation, teenage pregnancies and healthy friendship between adolescent girls and boys.

On Day 4, there was a group presentation on adolescent and AIDS related topics as programmes for right channeling of adolescents’ energy, rehabilitation of the AIDS patients, the need of sex education and counseling of the AIDS patients and AIDS advocacy for community participation to fight this incurable disease.

During the workshop, Varinder Sharma, DSS and officiating DEO, Ludhiana, monitored the progress of AIDS workshops at Jagraon.

Ashok Tandon, Vice-Principal, Ramgarhia School, Ludhiana, Harmesh Kochhar, Headmaster, GHS, Amargarh Kaler, Rakesh Kumar, and Pawan Kumar and Beant Kaur also expressed their views on AIDS.

Gupta Model begins New Year with fun

'New Year 2007' was celebrated by the 'Gupta Model High School,' 72 Club Road, Ludhiana. The function started with a 'havan' followed by a dance party.

The Principal addressed the students and gave warm wishes on the occasion. She also motivated the students to make best efforts in every field of life so as to make a mark in the world. The students of the school enjoyed the event which was full of fun  and frolic.

Rally marks New Year celebrations

Ludhiana, January 1
The NSS unit of Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College organised a social awareness rally here today to mark the New Year. The rally, organised in association with Coca-Cola and Top Careers and You, included activities like first-aid training, civil defence training, lecture on HIV and liver diseases by Dr Rajoo Chhina, Professor and Head of Gastro, DMCH.

The rally started from college premises and covered the areas of Subhash Nagar, Sunder Nagr, Valmiki Ghati, Circular Road, Shivpuri Road, Gandhi Nagar, Chand Cinema Road, GT Road, Old Sabzi Mandi and Daresi Ground.

Nearly 150 groups of volunteers marched through streets of the surrounding areas to create awareness among people about adverse effects of social evils on the prosperity of agrarian society. Vanmahotsav was also celebrated in which volunteers planted nearly 100 saplings on the college premises. A lecture on tree plantation was also delivered by Prof Deepak Kaushal.

1,200 eye patients given free treatment

The Manav Bhalai Manch, with cooperation of State Bank of Patiala, organised a free eye check-up and operation camp at Maghi Memorial College for Women here.
Giving details of the camp to the mediapersons here today, Mr Manohar Lal Verma, general-secretary of the manch, said Dr G.S. Dhami, Dr Bandna Modi, and Dr Ravinder Kaur from Ludhiana alongwith their teams examined patients.

Out of 1,215 patients, 212 patients were recommended for performing operations and an equal number of patients for adjustment of lens free of cost.

Medicines and spectacles were given free of cost to the patients. The vehicles of Maghi Memorial College provided daily transport to the patients to Ludhiana for operations and the process would be completed by January 5, said Mr Tejwant Singh advocate and secretary of the college Trust.

The camp was inaugurated by Dr Sarinder Mohan Sidhu, Civil Surgeon, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mr Baljinder Singh PCS, Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Mr Bansi Lal of Khanna Vikas Manch.

The function was presided over by Lieut-Gen Jaswant Singh Mann (retd), and Mr Gunveer Singh, Assistant General Manager, State Bank of Patiala, was the chief-guest. He gave Rs 15,000 to the manch.

Some traders and industrialists of Mandi Gobindgarh also extended financial help.

Chairman of the manch Som Nath Lutava thanked the guests.
