Nothing special about GMSH
Chandigarh, January 3 The general public, especially patients, seems to have been taken for a ride. There are inadequate infrastructure, equipment and expert doctors in various specialities and work force mandatory for a multi-speciality hospital. The hospital lacks basic infrastructure, including CT-Scan and MRI. A majority of patients are being asked to get costly tests done at private clinics. It is alleged that doctors have been prescribing tests to patients and suggesting particular clinics for those. Doctors have been referring serious patients to the PGI and the GMCH. The GMSH has inadequate strength of specialists and other staff. A majority of departments are being run with MBBS and resident doctors. The GMSH authorities claim that the hospital is on the track of progress and multi-specialities are being added. It will shortly recruit 20 senior resident doctors at the departments of surgery, orthopaedics, medicine, gynaecology and paediatrics. The introduction of super-specialties in the department of cardiology, urology and neurosurgery is under way. The proposal for setting up of a trauma centre is still under consideration. Specialities like endoscopic surgery, TMT and advanced urology have been introduced. |

Rahul gets top slot in
junior ranking
Chandigarh, January 3 His ranking came after his performance in the junior golf circuit which concluded with the Western India championship in Mumbai on December 22. The Chandigarh golfer returned a three-under four-round score of 227 to clinch his sixth title of the national circuit. Rahul had finished second in the junior championship last year. This year he had a lead of eight points over his nearest rival, Amanjyot Singh of Jaipur. I met Rahul along with his father, Mr Amit Bakshi, at the Golf Club on Tuesday. His father was glad that Rahul had got an Oil India scholarship from August last year. A growing Rahul is facing problems with his iron shots. His plus point is his drive. He has a good drive but the problem comes when he goes into the iron shots after the driver. His coach and mentor, Jassi Grewal, is seized of the problem. He has been working on his distance control which naturally become erratic as teenagers gain height. Today he has touched 5 ft 9.5 in and is growing. Good in his studies, Rahul is appearing for the pre-board these days. This is in preparation for the board exams which are scheduled for March. But even board exams have not deterred him from having a last taste of competitive golf. Yes, he will take part in the Toyoto World Junior Team Qualifying (under 19) tournament to be held at the Damailaut Golf and Country Club in Malaysia from January 22 to 25. In August last Rahul finished second in the Malaysian 100-plus Junior Open. He is hopeful of doing well on the long course of Malaysia because of his long drives. He has also set his sights on making it into the Eisenhower Cup team in 2008. Rahul talks highly of Jassi Grewal and his St John’s Principal who have helped him a lot to reach the top spot he is in today. Rahul holds the national record for returning the best ever round by an Indian
subjunior in a recognised tournament. He played a six-under card of 64 at the Tollygunge Golf Course in the Eastern India
Junior/Subjunior Championship held in November, 2004. |
