Lifters vie for slot in National Rural Games

Ludhiana, January 5
Boys and girls attending a preparatory camp (weightlifting) here since December 27 took part in the final trials today.

The selected weightlifters will represent Punjab in the forthcoming National Rural Games slated to be held in Aizwal (Mizoram) from January 16 to 19.

Competition in four disciplines - weightlifting (boys and girls), football (boys), volleyball (boys and girls) and tug-of-war (boys) - will be held during this four-day sports meet.

According to Harbans Singh, senior weightlifting coach and Sports Authority of India coordinator, who is accompanying the Punjab contingent as in-charge, seven girls and eight boys would be shortlised from these campers for the national meet.

Similarly, probables for football, volleyball and tug-of-war have been undergoing coaching at Hoshiarpur.

Mohan Singh (weightlifting), Surinder Singh (volleyball), Veena (volleyball), Gurmeet Singh (football) and Jagir Nahar (tug-of-war) will accompany the Punjab squad as coaches, said Harbans Singh.

Akhil steers KVM School to 10-wkt win

Ludhiana, January 5
A superb all-round performance by Akhil Aggarwal (4 for 10 and 54 n.o.) steered Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, to a convincing 10-wicket win over Saraswati Modern High School, Hambran Road, in the first match of the PCA Parle Inter-School Cricket Tournament (u-17) being organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association at Arya College grounds here today.

In a 40-over each side match, Saraswati Modern School, after winning the toss, were shot out for 85 runs in 30.5 overs. Harjeet top scored with 18 runs, followed by Gaurav (16), Kanav (8) and Nikhil Jain (6).

For Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Akhil Aggarwal was the pick of bowlers, capturing four wickets for 10 runs. Abhishek Talwar grabbed two wickets for 4 runs, while Abhijit, Jassi and Shivam Sharma took one wicket each.

KVM achieved the target without losing any wicket. The opening pair of Akhil Aggarwal and Abhishek Talwar made the required runs without being separated. Akhil remained unbeaten on 54, which included eight hits to the fence, while Abhishek remained unconqured on 26.

Earlier, Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, senior vice-president of the Ludhiana District Cricket Association and chairman, selection committee, Punjab (seniors), inaugurated the tournament in which four teams - Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Saraswati Modern High School and Nightingale Public School are taking part.
