Two assaulted
: Two occupants of a car were attacked in the main market here by some persons. While the car was damaged, its occupants were injured. Sandeep Singh, son of Amar Singh of Dialpur, accompanied by his relative Mandeep Singh, was travelling in a car when some persons parked a motor cycle in front of the car forcing it to stop. The moment, the car halted, both occupants were attacked fiercely by some persons, who fled from the scene before the police arrived. Whilst the injured are under treatment, the police has started investigating the matter.

Suspension flayed: The Punjabi Lekhak Manch, Anti-corruption Front, Adyapak Chetna Manch, Samrala, and other intellectuals have condemned the suspension of Professor Jagmohan Singh, Head, Department of Physics, Malwa College, Bondli, Samrala at a meeting here. The meeting was chaired by Prof Baldeep Singh, President, Panjabi Lekhak Manch. Dr Gulzar Md Goria, General Secretary, said Prof Jagmohan Singh was not only a poet, but also the senior most and dedicated teacher of the college. In order to pave way for a junior lady lecturer to act as the officiating principal, the authorities have illegally and unjustly suspended Jagmohan Singh. Various organisations represented by commandant Raspal Singh, Mehma Singh Kang, Prem Sagar Sharma and Master Tarlochan and Prof Hamdardvir Naaushehrvi have appealed to the people of the area to raise their voices against anti-educational policies of the authorities. They also appealed to the administration to re-instate lecturer.

Rally
: The CITU organised a state-level rally here on Friday. The rally was addressed by its general secretary and MP, Mr Tapan Sen. Addressing the gathering, Mr Sen said the UPA government was pursuing the policies of the NDA government. “Instead of trying to implement the common minimum programme, the UPA government is working to safeguard the interests of the capitalists,” he maintained. Most of the speakers condemned the hanging of former Iraq President Saddam Hussain. A two-minute silence was also observed to pay homage to the departed leader.

Workshop: A two-day workshop on cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation organised by the Physiotherapy Department of Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor R.P.Bajpai here on Friday. Dr Rajeev Agarwal, Head of the Department of Neurology at AIIMS, was the chief speaker. A number of physiotherapists, besides faculty members and students of the university participated in the workshop.
