The Big Fight will dwarf the rest Chandigarh, January 9 The Congress is expected to field new faces this time. The BJP will mostly repeat its candidates, except for four or five seats. In the next five days, the elections scenario will be almost clear. The This election will see a major clash between two titans — Capt Amarinder Singh and Mr Parkash Singh Badal. For the past five years, the state’s politics has revolved around both. And in the elections, the focus will remain on the two. Capt Amarinder Singh has practised politics that has kept him in the limelight and pushed to the edge all important actors in his party as well as in the Opposition during the past five years. Undoubtedly, the Captain has been successful in his strategy devised to make his opponents ineffective within the party and outside. With his aggressive style of functioning, Capt Amarinder Singh made space for himself in the top political echelons in no time after taking over as Chief Minister in February, 2002. Mr Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh, after initial dithering, faced the Captain with all their might, taking him on. With the emergence of Capt Amarinder Singh on the political scene, a new political chapter in the state’s political history began five years ago. The relationship between the ruling party and the main Opposition party has never been so tense and bitter as it was during the past five years. It can be said with certainty that Punjab politics will never be the same again. the next four weeks will witness the most fierce political battle between Capt Amarinder Singh and Mr Badal. Media managers of Mr Badal are aware that Capt Amarinder Singh is the most potent weapon in the Congress armour. So, all their guns are trained to incapacitate him. They avail of every possible opportunity to mount an attack on him. The focus of all major advertisements campaigns launched by the SAD is to tarnish the image of Capt Amarinder Singh. Likewise, the think-tank of Capt Amarinder Singh is aware that the biggest and, perhaps, the only challenge to the ruling Congress is from the SAD supremo. Who will be the winner ? The story will unfold on February 27 as the election results pour in. |
