PGI attains success in stem cell
transplantation
Chandigarh, January 11 Being a premier health and research institute of the northern region after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the PGI had been experimenting on the stem cell transplantation since 2003 in departments, including Internal Medicines, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Neurology and certain others. In the last six years of experimentation and research, the stem cells transplantation has yielded successful results in the Department of Internal Medicines where nine patients have shown favourable results as yet. Unfortunately two critically serious patients who were also tried for stem cells transplantation have died after successful recovery. The first ever stem cells transplant method was conducted upon a patient in October, 2003. Adding to it, the stem cell transplantation has also shown progress in treating orthopaedically handicapped man. A 35-year-old patient, Uggar Singh, who had been undergoing treatment of his spinal cord with the help of the stem cells transplantation, has shown recovery. This is the first case in the Department of Orthopaedics of the PGI. The stem cells transplant has been used after adequate decompression and stabilisation in the spinal cord of Mr Uggar Singh, said Dr Raj Bahadur, professor, Department of Orthopaedics, PGI. |

Doc claims victory over snoring
Chandigarh, January 11 Having taught English language and literature to degree and postgraduate classes for about 10 years, Dr Dhillon worked as the Director and the Head of the Department of Youth Welfare, Panjab University, for 27 years. “I decided to work on snoring as I suffered from the problem myself and was told that there was no cure to the problem ,” he said. Dr Dhillon has come up with a 90-page book on snoring titled, ‘Victory over Snoring’ which will be released by the PU Vice-Chancellor tomorrow. “Snoring is an abnormality which is common around the world. It affects the life and health of a snorer adversely in many ways. The real cause of snoring had never been identified but I have discovered that the real cause of snoring lies in the lungs and not in the throat,” said Dr Dhillon. The book also suggests a cure for snoring. Divided in to six chapters, the book deals with the subject systematically. The traditional approach towards analysing and tackling the ailment of snoring, it has been shown, is based chiefly on the belief that sound of snoring is produced when some of the organs in the mouth create an obstruction in the air passage while one breathes during sleep. The author has tried to prove that such an approach is quite fallacious. On the other hand, he has tried to demonstrate that snoring is created when some of the organs in the mouth instead of obstructing the air passage, act jointly as air-stream mechanism to provide breathing during sleep when the lungs fail to generate normal respiration when muscles in the thoracic area around the lungs go dormant during sleep. He said a ten-day course has been specifically designed for the cure of snoring the schedule of which has been included in the book. Dr Dhillon is the founder Chairman of the Mission of Universal Harmony, Chandigarh, set up for propagation of philosophy of art consciousness for the welfare of mankind. |
