‘Fusion-2007’ enthuses dentists Ludhiana, January 14 Students from 12 dental colleges of North India are participating in the cultural, entertainment and educational event. In the tug-of-war, both boys and girls from Dashmesh Dental College, Faridkot, proved their might. While the Faridkot boys prevailed upon Guru Nanak Dev Dental College, Sunam, the girls trounced hosts BJS Dental College. In the mixed-doubles competition, BJS Dental College avenged their defeat by beating Faridkot. Anshuman Modi and Parul of the host institution emerged winners in musical chairs among boys and girls, respectively. Earlier, chairman of the managing committee of BJS Dental College Baba Jaswant Singh inaugurated the event and went around the stalls displaying latest equipment and instruments used in dentistry. He was accompanied by institute vice-chairman Kirpal Singh, Principal Dr V.K. Rana, Vice-Principal Dr Vivek Saggar, and organising secretary Dr Ajay Chhabra. In his address, Baba Jaswant Singh appreciated the work of the organisers and students. He said such programmes should be organised on a regular basis to enable dental professionals acquire competitive skills and encourage knowledge-sharing among different institutions. According to Dr Ajay Chhabra, a seminar on “Endodontics Posts” would be organised on the concluding day. Principal, Dr R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital, Kolkata, Dr D. Majumdar, and Dr K.K. Wadhwani of King George Medical College, Lucknow, will be the main speakers at the seminar, while Dr Ravi Kapoor, Director, PG Studies at Mulana Dental College, Ambala, will be the moderator. |

School gym for one and all Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 14 The school authorities feel that the facility has been provided with the view to making students health conscious and motivating residents of the area to work out every day. The Parent Teachers Association of the school and the village panchayat have joined hands to make this happen. The centre has been set up in a recently-built hall on the school premises. A sum of Rs 2 lakh was spent by the panchayat on buying equipment, while the PTA arranged a full-time instructor. Teachers will also provide guidance to students during extra time. The gymnasium will remain open on Sundays and holidays. On such days, teachers will supervise its functioning. According to school Principal Krishana Sharda, the project has proved to be a boon for the youth of
the area. “A large number of youngsters from the surrounding 10 villages, who were otherwise vulnerable to evils like drugs, have started coming to the gymnasium twice a day. Schoolchidren, both boys and girls, are being provided coaching during physical education classes,” she said while talking to Ludhiana Tribune. Interaction with students working out in the gymnasium revealed that a majority of them were impressed with the novelty of certain equipment installed. Treadmills, leg press and bench press machines, etc. have replaced the old-fashioned dumbbells. |

Computer teachers flay state govt Ludhiana, January 14 In a press note today, Computer Teachers Union general secretary Rupinder Singh alleged that the government had falsely claimed to have increased the salary of computer teachers. He said the notification regarding the enhancement of salary from Rs 4,500 to Rs 7,000 remained in papers only. He said the state government had also sacked over 800 computer teachers who were on contract. In the absence of any jobs, they had been forced to go on a hunger strike, he said. He added that teachers would not tolerate anti-teacher policies of the state government and continue with their struggle till their demands were fulfilled. |
