Ash, Abhishek get engaged

Mumbai, January 14
Bollywood hearthrob Aishwarya Rai and actor Abhishek Bachchan tonight got engaged at a quiet ceremony here, setting the stage for the marriage of the film industry's most talked-about couple. The engagement of Abhishek, who turns 31 on February 5 next, to 33-year-old Aishwarya, was held at the residence of Aishwarya.

The event, attended by family members and close friends of the Bachchan and Rai families, took place between 8.30pm and 9pm, hours after Aishwarya and Abhishek returned here from New York from the promo of their just-released film “Guru” directed by Mani Ratnam.

Abhishek had proposed to Aishwarya yesterday in New York during the premiere of their latest film “Guru”, the sources said. The engagement took place immediately after their return. Later, family members and friends gathered at “Jalsa”, the residence of the Bachchans at Juhu here, to celebrate the occasion. — UNI/PTI
