Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, January 15
As a part of the corporate social responsibility campaign, the Vardhman Group of Industries will provide free industrial training to students of SCD Government College, Ludhiana, who belong to the SC/ST/OBC and other economically weaker sections.

Giving the details, Col P.S. Chaudhry, Director, HR of the Vardhman Group of Industries, said the group felt that there was a lot of potential in the these students, but they were deprived of the opportunities.

He further said they had conducted a survey recently, which showed that the weaker sections of society needed upliftment and industrial organisations must come forward to provide capability-enhancement training to poor
and backward students studying in the various colleges and universities.

Dr Prem Kumar, President of the Punjab Commerce and Management Association and Adviser to the Vardhman Group on strategic management, said the capability enhancement programme (CEP) of the group aimed to develop cognitive abilities in students to make them fit for the job market. "This will boost the morale of students and their public speaking will be improved.

They will also be trained to appear in competitive examinations during this one-month training programme and the whole expenditure of the students' stay, study, meals etc will be met by the group. Moreover, students completing the training will be given Rs 1000 as stipend along with completion certificates,” said Dr Kumar adding that the training would start in May, 2007.

Dr Malkiat Singh, Principal, SCD Government College, said industry-institute interface was the must for the capability enhancement.

It would build self- confidence among poor students and enhance their job employability.

He said though the government had launched many schemes for their upliftment, yet voluntary efforts of the private sector like Vardhman would definitely help these students.

He added the college would provide every possible help to the group for shortlisting the candidates for training.

Many of the faculty members also welcomed the project and said it was a ray of hope for students from the weaker sections and hoped that more such companies would come forward in this direction.

In their comprehensive presentations, the guest speakers informed that when a tooth was treated endodontically, a substantial amount of tooth structure was lost. To increase its strength and retention, a post core was inserted. Explaining further, they said a tooth had two parts -'root' which was embedded in the bone and 'crown', the visible portion of the tooth in the mouth. The 'post', also called 'dowel' was inserted into the root canal of the tooth. Thus, the core was the retentive component which behaved like a prepared crown for the placement of a retainer. With this technique, tooth was strengthened, thereby, prolonging its life.

Prominent among those present on the occasion were Baba Jaswant Singh, Founder and Chairman of the institute, Mr Kirpal Singh, Vice-Chairman, Dr (Col) Rana V. K., Principal, Dr Vivek Saggar, Vice-Principal.

At the two-day event, students of 12 dental colleges from North India participated in fun games, cultural programme, trade fair, talent hunt competition, quiz contest and poster-making competition.
