‘Scientific approach must to conserve energy’
Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 17 The call came on the conclusion of the science exhibition organised by the students today. Appreciating the role of amateur scientists in creating awareness among masses about significance of scientific principles, Ms Sharma claimed that understanding and application of these simple theories would save a lot of energy and save environment from being degraded by indiscriminate use of discoveries and inventions. According to Mr Jasbir Singh and Mr Tirath Singh, both in-charge of the event, about 50 still and working models, based on the principles of physics, chemistry and biology were exhibited by the students. Models of fire alarm, nuclear reactor, human eye, alimentary canal, periodic table and carnet heat engine were appreciated by all. Sandeep Kaur, Neha Bhakoo, Vinesh Kumar, Priyanka Bhakoo, Jaspreet Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Ramandeep Kaur, Kamalpreet Singh and Hardeep Singh were felicitated for their outstanding presentation. |

Honours for teaching fraternity
Ludhiana, January 17 Ms Manjit Kaur, Deputy DEO, said teaching was a unique profession. As a teacher, one had to play many roles like that of a communicator, a disciplinarian, a conveyor of information, an evaluator, a classroom manager, a counsellor, a decision-maker, a role model and a surrogate parent. Speaking on the personality development aspect, Mr Hari Singh, Principal (retd), GNE College, said personality played an important role in one's life as it gave the individual all that was needed for his adjustment with the environment. Prof Ram Singh, chief organiser, GGSSC, briefed the gathering about the activities carried out by the organisation. He said the GGSSC was working hard to eradicate social evils and to strive for the uplift of society, particularly the literate youth in schools and colleges. He said its activities in schools,colleges had been recognised by various universities and DPI, Schools and Colleges. An open discussion on the role of educational institutions in shaping the personality of youth was also organised on the occasion. Mr Iqbal Singh, Director, spoke about the activities being carried out by the Directorate of Social Empowerment and Economic Development, GGSSC. He said free career guidance and jobs were being provided to students and seminars were being organised in schools and colleges to make the youth aware about the prospects of various academic streams. |

GCW honours ‘Great Women’
Ludhiana, January 17 Punjab Women Commission Chairperson Parminder Kaur was the chief guest. Social activist and writer Urmila Anand presided over the function. Former Director, Health Services, Punjab, Dr G.S. Preet, Chandigarh Mayor Harjinder Kaur and GCW, Amritsar, lecturer Dr Gurnam Kaur were the speakers on the occasion. The programme commenced with “Shabad Gayan” and the lighting of ceremonial lamp by Resource person Harjinder Kaur talked about the role of women in the modern scenario. “Today’s educated and awakened women like to put their talent, energy and education to best possible use. They want to create a new social order where they can have ample opportunities for their growth. Only materialistic happiness cannot contribute to the uplift of human values,” she said. Dr Gurcharan Kaur emphasised on providing education on family life to youth so that they could prepare themselves for taking up the roles. Urmila Anand talked about the evil of female foeticide in society. The “Great Women” honoured were Dr Manjit Kaur, Dr Rajwant Kaur, Gurcharan Kaur Kochhar, Bhupinder Kaur Kavita, Dr Madanjit Kaur Sahota, Dr Prabhjot Kaur, Narinder Sekhon, Usha Khanna, Jagdish Kaur, Savvy Surjit Singh, Veena Dada, Dr Manju Chawla, Dr Sarbjot Kaur, Ms Viney Sharma and Dr Mohinder Kaur. |
1-yr jail in cheque-bounce case
Ludhiana, January 17 Mr Thapar was sentenced to one year imprisonment along with fine of Rs 5,000. The orders were pronounced by the court while deciding on the complaint filed by Karan Madan of Sunder Nagar, Ludhiana. It was submitted by the complainant that the accused had taken loan from him on interest. He made payments of interest through cheques. Still, the accused owed huge amount to the complainant. The accused had issued cheques in order to discharge the legally enforceable liability, the complainant added. The cheques were dishonoured on presentation. In spite of sending legal notice, the accused failed to make the payment, added the complainant. However, the accused pleaded that he had availed of the loan worth Rs 4 lakh. The entire sum was paid off by him to the complainant. He added that the accused had taken cheques as collateral, which were later misused by him. But after appreciating the evidence on record, the court found him guilty and pronounced the sentenced. |
