PGI doctor on ICMR body

Chandigarh, January 18
The Medical Faculties of Indian Universities have elected Dr S.K. Singh, Professor of Urology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, as their representative on the governing body of the Indian Council of Medical Research for a period of three years from September 12, 2006.

Dr S.K. Singh has been working with the institute for the past 23 years and has been actively involved in the management of patients, teaching and research. He completed his post graduation in surgery and post doctoral training in urology from PGIMER, Chandigarh.

A member of five international urological societies, Dr Singh has visited eight countries including UK and USA for academic activities.

In the past five years, he has presented 35 papers on clinical and basic research in urology at various international forums.

The American Urological Association has also invited him to California where he will present two research papers in May.

Rare surgery performed

Chandigarh, January 18
A rare complex coronary angioplasty was performed on 56-year-old Teg Singh of Kharar subdivision at the Grecian Super-speciality Hospital, Mohali, setting a new benchmark in the region.

Dr Sudheer Saxena, Consultant Intervention Cardiologist with the hospital, operated upon Mr Teg Singh. The angioplasty included the use of a wire to affect ballooning and subsequent stent placement in the blocked arteries.

Dr Shivpreet Samra of the hospital claimed that the surgery was an achievement and was performed for the first time in the North India.

Performing this surgery on a patient who had a totally occluded right coronary artery was just incredible going by the standards of angioplasty nationwide added Dr Samra. — TNS

Diploma course in naturopathy, yoga

Gandhi Smarak Bhawan in Sector 16 has initiated a three-and-a-half year diploma course in naturopathy and yoga, besides one-year medical assistance course. Disclosing this, Director of the Bhawan R.S Rawat said the courses have been sponsored by Mahatma Gandhi National Academy of Naturopathy, New Delhi . "Naturopathy, a natural way of treating chronic diseases, has gained tremendous popularity not only in India but abroad as well," he added.

The last date for admission to these courses would be January 31, 2007 .

Shivalik lads register win

Chandigarh, January 18
A fine knock of 49 by Avinash Kumar enabled DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 C team to register a 79-run victory over DAV Public School, Sector 15, in the opening match of the Chandigarh under-19 Inter-School Cricket Tournament for Adviser’s Cup at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here today. Put in to bat first DAVSSS-8 piled up 157 for 7 in the match which was reduced to 20 overs a side due to weather conditions. Avinash was well supported by Gagandeep Singh. Both the batsmen stitched 82-run partnership for the second wicket to accumulate 157 for 7 in the stipulated overs. Aashutosh and Saurabh were the most successful bowlers for DAVP-15 as they bagged two wickets for 26 and 24 runs, respectively.

In reply, DAVP-15 put up a dismal show as the team could make just 78 for 9 in 20 overs. Arjan Chadha made a defiant 24 whereas the last four batsmen were sent back to pavilion without opening their accounts. Sandeep Gandhi claimed 3 for 8 while Saurabh Dhaliwal took 2 for 17.

At the same venue, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41 thrashed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23 by 87 runs in another match. Batting first Shivalik Public gave target of 115 runs which could not be achieved by GMSSS-23. The GMSSS-23 team were bundled out on paltry 27 runs in just five overs.

In the other two matches of the tournament held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, Nav Bal Niketan lost to Government Model Senior Secondary School-19 by 9 wickets while DAVSSS-8 A defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School-22 by eight wickets.

Earlier, Chandigarh Finance-cum-Secretary Sports S K Sandhu inaugurated the tournament. Also present on the occasion were Director Sports Inderjit Singh Sandhu and Joint Director Sports JPS Sidhu.

SAI selection trials

Selection trials for induction of inmates (girls) in Sports Authority of India, Training Centre, Sector 18 will be held from January 22 to 24 at the centre here.

The sportspersons in the age group of 14 to16 years, in the disciplines of athletics, basketball, hockey and volleyball, will be selected under Regular as well as Day-Boarding scheme.

The position holders in national/state/inter-zonal level competitions will be given preference.

The registration process will start at 10 a m on January 22 followed by general battery tests, skill tests, medical tests and interview of identified candidates.

The interested girls should come along with the original certificates such as age proof, educational qualification certificates, sports achievements, two sets of attested photocopies of certificates and two passport size photographs to the office of Assistant Director, SAI STC, Sector 18 before the start of registration process.

Tennis tourney from January 26

The Total Tennis Academy Tennis Tournament, to be held from January 26 to 31, will be played at the Punjab Agriculture University’s clay courts in Ludhiana.

According to Mr Amitabh Chandel, Chairman, Fort Foundation, the championship will be played in different age categories, i.e., u-10, u-12, u-14 and u-16 for boys while in the girls’ section the categories will be u-12 and u-14. The other categories will be ladies singles, men’s singles and doubles, men’s 35+ and 45+ singles.

Poonam wins gold in 100 m race

Poonam of Morni block won the 100 m race on the opening day of the Panchkula District Panchayti Raj Sports Meet at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3, here today. Komal (Raipurrani) and Rekha (Morni) secured second and third positions, respectively. Over 150 sportspersons are taking part in the meet.

B’ball title for Dev Samaj girls

Chandigarh, January 18
Dev Samaj College of Education for Women, Sector 36 won the Panjab University Basketball (Women) B-Division Championship defeating Khalsa College, Gardhiwala, Hoshiarpur, by 44-26 at PU Campus here today.

The maximum scorer for the winning team was Gaganpreet with 32 points followed by Amanpreet’s six. For the losing side, Rajbir (10) and Ramandeep (8) were the main scorers. — TNS

In the general body meeting of the Chandigarh Twenty-20 Cricket Association, Mr I.D. Kamboj and Satish Gandhi were unanimously elected president and general secretary, respectively.

The other office bearers are: senior vice-presidents — Mr Ravinder Talwar and Mr Rajesh Aggarwal; vice-presidents — Mr Rajil Swahney and Mr Narinder Bansal; finance secretary — Pankaj Gupta; press secretary — Balbir Singh; joint secretaries — Amarjit Kumar and Vishal Kapoor.

2 HCS officers join UT Admn

Chandigarh, January 18
Two HCS officers today gave their joining report to the Chandigarh Administration. Out of a panel of six HCS officers sent by the Haryana Government, the Administration had selected three -- Mrs Vandana Dasodia, Mr P.K. Sharma and Mr Jaswinder Singh.

While Mrs Dasodia and Mr Sharma had given their joining report, the third was not interested to join in Chandigarh. Now, the Administration has been asked to select the third officer from among the panel sent earlier.

Though the decision to allot the departments had not been made public, sources said Mr Sharma could be posted in the Industries Department and Mr Kamlesh, at present posted in CITCO, could be posted as Land Acquisition Officer. There is also possibility of some reshuffling of the departments to adjust the new officers.

Drive against unauthorised sale of helmets

Chandigarh, January 18
The Chandigarh police has launched a special campaign against roadside vendors selling unauthorised non-ISI mark helmets.

Police sources said during the first fortnight of the year as many as 18 cases have been registered and 18 persons selling such helmets have been arrested. The police has in all seized 217 helmets from vendors during its special drive. — TNS
