Chandigarh, January 23
Ramakant of Chandigarh zone emerged winner in the men’s table tennis (singles) event while pairing with another local, Ajay Thakural. The duo also grabbed the doubles’ title on the opening day of the Central Revenue Sports Meet (North Zone) 2007 held at Sector-7 sports complex here today.

Mr Mohammed Izhar Alam, IPS, DG (Vigilance) Punjab, inaugurated the meet.

K Jayaraman of Delhi-Jaipur Zone and Kapil Dubey of MP-Chattisgarh Zone won the plus 40 and plus 50 singles tennis titles, respectively. The event was organised at the Lake Club courts. K Jayaraman defeated Deepak Mishra in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the above-40 singles final.

Kapil Dubey defeated JC Pegu of Delhi-Jaipur Zone in the above -50 category final in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

The top honours in the open singles final were claimed by Jagdish Tanwar of Delhi-Jaipur who defeated Ajay Chatterjee of MP-Chattisgarh Zone 6-2, 6-2.

Mr S L Thakur, Commissioner (Appeals), Central Excise, distributed the prizes.

DAV school lads rout SPS in cricket

A valuable knock of 40 by Shahnawaz and allround performance by Anil Sihag (23 not out and 2 for 4) enabled DAV Senior Secondary School-8 'B' to rout Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, by eight wickets in the semifinals of the inaugural Chandigarh Inter-School Under-19 Cricket Tournament for the Adviser's Cup here today. The tournament is being organised by the Chandigarh Sports Department at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here.

Required to score 93 runs for victory in a 35 overs a side semifinal, DAVSSS-8 'B' achieved their target without difficulty in 17.1 overs. They made 93 for the loss of two wickets.

Shahnawaz slammed five boundaries and contributed 40 runs. Anil Sihag remained not out with 23 runs. Tinkoo scored six not out.

Earlier, Sanjay Public School won the toss and elected to bat first. A 53-run partnership for the third wicket between Gaurav Vaid (27) and Lakhbir Singh (23) helped them post 92 runs in 30.1 overs.

Left arm spinner Rahul Chara (3 for 22), Nawab (2 for 11) and Anil Sihag (2 for 4) of DAVSSS-8 'B' restricted Sanjay Public School to 92 in 30.1 overs.

DPS win by 7 wickets

Panchkula, January 23
Delhi Public School, Pinjore, thrashed St Xavier’s Public School, Sector 20, Panchkula, by seven wickets in a league match of the first Satluj Numero Uno U-14 Cricket Tournament for school teams, played on its premises here today.

Batting first after winning the toss, St. Xavier’s scored just 72 runs. Saurabh of Delhi Public School took four wickets conceding 10 runs. Rachit and Gagan took two wickets each conceding eight and five runs, respectively.

While chasing the target, DPS, Pinjore’s, Gagan scored 35 runs for Delhi Public School and Udham played a knock of 30 n.o. The team achieved the target in just 6.5 overs.
