Early diagnosis key to treating lower leg PVD
Chandigarh, January 24 Being similar to cardiovascular disease, the PVD is caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis occurs when fatty deposits or plaque build up on the walls of arteries, thus narrowing them, experts say. “The blocked arteries in the leg reduce the blood flow so that the surrounding muscles do not get enough oxygen, which causes the leg muscles to cramp and causes pain upon walking or exercise that disappears on resting. This is called intermittent claudication,” says Dr Rahul Jindal, a consultant in vascular surgery. “Weakness in legs, numbness, tingling, coldness, changes in skin colour, rash, marks or ulcers on legs or feet are some of the symptoms of the PVD. The skin on the lower legs may go dry with poor toenail or hair growth,” he opined. According to Dr Jindal: “It is estimated that less than 30 per cent of the PVD patients are diagnosed with the disease, mainly due to the fact that over 50 per cent are asymptomatic - leg pain may be present in only 10 per cent patients.” Experts are also of the view that people with lower leg PVD may often have same type of fatty buildup in arteries supplying the heart, brain and kidney. Patients are at high risk of stroke, heart disease and kidney failure. People with the PVD are also more likely to have diabetes and hypertension. The disease is often symptomless but becomes more severe over time and without treatment can seriously impair a person’s mobility and independence. If it continues to progress, symptoms may get worse. If blood flow to the lower legs and feet is restricted, it can lead to pain at rest, poor healing of wounds and cause infections, the doctors claim. Early diagnosis with history, physical examination and a simple test - ankle brachial index (ABI) - offer the possibility of improving the lives of millions of patients afflicted with the disease. Treatment can be started to relieve symptoms and stop progression of the disease. |

Sector 42 tennis courts near completion
Chandigarh, January 24 “Hopefully, the inauguration of the courts will take place next week as everything is ready there except the final rolling,” said Mr Sidhu. The work of laying the courts was started in 2004. But due to administrative reasons, it came to a halt midway when the Engineering Department officials realised that the sanction for heavy compacting after laying the brick layers had not been sought while taking the administrative approval. According to sources, the expenditure incurred on heavy rolling was not mentioned in the estimate prepared by the Engineering Department. The Sports Department also gave the green signal to the project without bothering to check the error. The work came to a halt when the Engineering Department refused to bear the expenditure on rolling. Due to lackadaisical attitude of the authorities, lakhs of rupees, spent by the department on fencing, sprinkler system and laying the brick layers were going waste. “But now everything has been settled. The final rolling will be done this week and the formalities will be completed later. We have purchased special poles for the courts. We too, are keen to start the courts as soon as possible,” said Mr Sidhu. With the starting of the courts, the players of southern sectors will benefit the most. |
