‘Voluntary’ cleaning of college campus resented
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 25
The authorities of Government College, Sector 46, here have come under fire for undertaking the “voluntary” cleaning of the college campus.

A section of college teachers stated that the college Principal collected funds from some teachers to take up the cleaning and leveling of the college grounds.

Stating that this was the work of the engineering wing of the Chandigarh Administration and not the responsibility of college teachers, a teacher pointed out that this was an administrative irregularity.

On the other hand, the Principal Ms Usha Jindal stated that she had written twice to the UT Administration’s engineering wing to get the campus cleared of the tall bushes and grass which was becoming home to snakes and insects. “But when nothing happened, we decided that cleaning can be undertaken as a voluntary effort. I contributed first and when the work began, some other teachers chipped in. No one was forced to pay,” she added.

Sources in the college, however, insisted that an office order was issued for the “collection” of this voluntary contribution and other than the teaching staff some of who even paid up to Rs 2000, the non-teaching staff was asked to contribute.

“What is the harm if a college is putting in its own effort to get its premises clean. Students are scared of moving about in the college because of so much of wild growth,” said the Principal.

When contacted, DPI Colleges UT Raji P Srivastava said she was not aware of any such thing happening in the college. “But if is happening, it is not the work of the college authorities. We have an engineering wing to take care of such works and enough funds for the same. However I will look into it,” she said.
