Adviser’s Cup for DAV lads

Chandigarh , January 25
DAV Senior Secondary School-8 ‘B’ team lifted the first Adviser’s Cup beating their other school team DAVSSS-8 ‘A’ team by two wickets in the Chandigarh Inter-School Under-19 Cricket Tournament at the Sector 16 cricket stadium here today.

Putting up a valiant show, the DAV ‘B’ team achieved the huge target of 258 runs losing 8 wickets in 39.3 overs.

Earlier, batting first, DAV ‘A’ piled up 257 for 6 in 40 overs with fine centuries from Gourav Chabra (100) and Vaibhav Narang (115). Chabra and Narang consolidated their innings with an authoritative 170-run partnership for the second wicket. Himanshu Chawla snapped 3 wickets for 49 while Rohit Rathi, Anil Sihag and Rahul Chara claimed one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Shivam Khurana steered the team to win his 58-run knock. He was well supported by Shahnawaz Khan and Himanshu Chawla, who scored 46 and 45 runs, respectively. Sumit Verma and Arjit Gupta took two wickets each conceding 35 and 48 runs, respectively.

Rahul Chara, who took 13 wickets, including 7 for 6 in one match, was declared the best bowler of the tournament while Shahnawaz Khan was adjudged the best batsman.

Shivika reaches tennis finals

Shivika secured her berth in the finals of the 2nd St Peter’s Open Tennis Tournament beating Gayatri 4-1, 4-0 in the girls u-18 category at St Peter’s School, Sector 37, here today.

In the boys u-18 section, Inderjot Singh beat Paramvir Toor 2-4, 4-2, 4-2 in a well-contested match and reached the quarterfinals.

GGDSD College victorious in baseball

Chandigarh, January 25
Local GGDSD College defeated DAV College, Sector 10, 3-1 in the Panjab University Inter-College Baseball (men) tournament, which concluded on the PU campus here today.

In the final match, Parminder Singh, Bhopal and Tarun were the only scorers, with one score each for the winners.

In the tournament, DAV-10 secured the second position, while SCD Govt College Ludhiana and the PU campus got third and fourth positions, respectively.

Earlier the league match, played between SCD Govt College, Ludhiana, and DAV-10, was drawn as both teams made one score each. In another match, SCD Ludhiana thrashed the hosts PU Campus 10-0.

GGS College win ball badminton title

Chandigarh, January 25
Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, won the Panjab University Inter-College Ball Badminton Women Championship on the PU campus here yesterday.

In the final match, GGS College beat Dev Samaj College 2-1 (8-29, 29-23, 29-16) to clinch the title.

Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, secured the second position, while the MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, and the PU campus got third and fourth positions, respectively.

Earlier, in semi-final matches, Dev Samaj College thrashed PU campus 2-0 score (29-8, 29-13) whereas GGS college beat MCM DAV 2-1 (24-29, 29-23, 29-11).

Hockey trials on Jan 29

Chandigarh, January 25
The Chandigarh Hockey Association will hold trials on January 29 at 2.30 p m at the Sector 42 hockey stadium to select the Chandigarh hockey team which will participate in the 33rd National Games being organized at Guwahati from February 9 to 18.

A training camp will also be held for selected players from January 30.

The Joint Secretary, Finance, UT Administration, Mrs Raji P. Shrivastava, has been designated as Special Secretary, Finance, Chandigarh Administration, since she is already in the selection grade.

The orders were issued with the approval of Administrator, UT Administration. Mrs Shrivastava is an IAS officer of the 1992 batch from the Punjab cadre.

The Chandigarh Administration today appointed Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner (AETC) Shingara Singh against the regular post of AETC. His name was cleared in a DPC held here today.
