New York resident gets treatment in city

Chandigarh, January 27
After finding it economical to undergo C3R, a non-surgical treatment, to get rid of keratoconus, a dreaded eye disease, Sebastian Rys, a flying instructor from New York, underwent the treatment at a hospital here.

This is not for the first time that eye patients from abroad have undergone surgeries and non-surgical treatments at the institute, scores of foreign patients have been visiting the city for treatment at economical rates.

Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Mr Sebastian Rys said that he had come to know about the facilities offered by the hospital from the Internet.

The expenditure on the treatment was comparatively much less here than in New York, he said. Moreover, one doesn’t have to stand in queue for treatment in India, he added.

Bank officers donate blood

Chandigarh, January 27
As many as 189 members of the Canara Bank Officer’s Association, Chandigarh Region, donated blood at a camp organised in association with the Department of Transfusion, PGI, at Sector 34 here yesterday.

Association members drawn from Ambala, Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Panchkula and Mohali along with their families came forwards to participate in the noble cause. Bank’s General Manager Y.L. Madan inaugurated the camp.

PGI doc gets Padma Shri

Dr H.S. Chawla, Professor and Head of the Department of Oral Health Sciences, PGI, has been conferred with Padma Shri by the Government of India. The PGI Director, Prof K.K. Talwar, has congratulated Dr Chawla for getting the prestigious award.

A member of the Dental Council of India, Dr Chawla had earlier bagged ‘Star Pedodontist 2004’ award and “Punjab Rattan 2006” at the silver jubilee celebrations of the All-India Conference of Intellectuals in August, 2006. Dr Chawla got training under the Commonwealth Fellowship at The London Hospital, Department of Child Dental Health, School of Dentistry, London, in 1979-1980. He was awarded the Fellowship of Japan Dental Association, 1991 and Futokukai Scholarship at the Department Of Paediatric Dentistry, Asahi Univ, at Hozumi, Japan, in 1993 where he learnt the use of SEM, EPMA, X-ray diffraction and also did research on Mechanism of NaF Solution as Cavity Liner using these techniques.

He has developed a new root canal filling material for the primary teeth. It earned him a patent in 2005. He has also patented a root canal irrigating needle.

Dainik Bhaskar enter semis

Dainik Bhaskar, Connect and AirTel entered the semifinals of the first inter-corporate Twenty-20 cricket tournament at the DAV College, Sector 10, here today.

The result of the fourth quarterfinal encounter was kept pending as losers Dell XI alleged that their opponents Sigma, who won by 51 runs, fielded an ineligible player.

An all-round performance by Arun Madan (34 and 2 for 16) helped Connect beat Canara Bank by 23 runs. Batting first, Connect XI made 162 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. In reply, Canara Bank could make 123 for 9 in 20 overs.

In another match, AirTel registered a seven-wicket victory over ICICI Bank. ICICI gave a 143-run target, which was achieved in 14.5 overs, losing three wickets.

Bhavika wins two titles in tennis

Bhavika clinched two titles in the second St Peter’s Open Tennis Tournament, which concluded at the St Peter’s School’s tennis courts in Sector 37 here today.

In girls’ under-12 final, Bhavika beat Nikita 6-3, 6-1 to win the top honours.

In the final of under-14 category, Bhavika again beat Nikita 6-2, 6-3 to win the title.

In boys’ section, Bhavtaran Singh won in under-12 category, beating Jatin Kharab 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Gagandeep Gill beat Pankaj Kumar 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-3 in under-14 section to win the title.

Tennis tourney from January 30

The Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration, will organise the Administrator’s Open Lawn Tennis Tournament for boys and girls under the age group of 12, 14 and 18 years at the Tennis Coaching Centre, Lake Sports complex, here from January 30 to February 1.

Entries can be sent to Mr Baldev Singh, Senior Lawn Tennis Coach, or Mr Parveen Kumar, Lawn Tennis coach, at Lake Sports Complex, here, by January 28. The draw of the matches will be decided on the same day.

Cricket trials tomorrow

Trials for selecting the Chandigarh civil services cricket team will be held at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here from 3.30 pm on January 29. The team will participate in the all-India civil services cricket tournament, to be held at Nagpur from February 12 to 21.

Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana, thrashed GGS Khalsa College (Women), Jhar Sahib, 10-0 on the first day of the Panjab University inter-college baseball (women) tournament at the PU grounds here today. The Government College for Women, Ludhiana, got a walkover as the Government College for Girls did not turn up. — TNS

Tiny tots’ day out on track

Chandigarh, January 27
A sports meet for the kindergarten section and classes I and II was held at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here today. Track events and games, including balloon bursting, threading beads, relay race, frog race and obstacle race were held.
