Punjab Votes ’07 Maneesh Chhibber and Dharmendra Joshi Tribune News Service Chandigarh, January 27 She is the sister-in-law of Congress MP from Jalandhar Rana Gurjit Singh. Due to rejection of Ms Rana’s papers, the MP’s wife, Ms Rajbans Kaur, who had filed her papers as a covering candidate, will now be the Congress candidate from the constituency. According to the information provided by the Election authorities, Ms Rana had filed only one set of nomination papers while the MP’s wife had filed three sets. It is learnt that Ms Rana, whose husband is a leading industrialist, had neither deposited the security of Rs 5,000 in cash nor submitted any receipt to the effect that the same had been deposited in the State Bank of India. She had also left the “age” column blank and had failed to submit an affidavit as per Form 26 pertaining to criminal record, if any. Interestingly, the Returning Officer (RO), Mr Karnail Singh, had pointed out this on the day of filing of nominations, Ms Sukhjinder Kaur had been informed about the discrepancies in the papers, but she apparently did nothing to rectify her “mistakes”. Today’s development gives credence to reports that the high-profile MP would somehow ensure that his wife, and not his sister-in-law, remained in the fray. The Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, said he would bring the matter to the notice of the party high command. He did not rule out the possibility of ‘faulty’ nomination papers having been filed to ensure these were rejected so as to allow the covering candidate become the party nominee. However, when contacted, Mr Rana Gurjit Singh denied the allegations. He claimed that the lapse must have been caused by ‘his man’ who had filled the nomination papers. He denied that papers were deliberately submitted with discrepancies. He also denied that there was any dispute in the family on the candidature of Ms Sukhjinder Kaur Rana. Ms Rana had been elected from the Kapurthala constituency in a byelection necessitated by the resignation of Mr Rana after the latter got elected to the Lok Sabha. There were indications that Ms Sukhjinder Kaur Rana’s husband Ranjit Singh did not want her to enter politics. Interestingly, the nomination papers of both sisters were attested by the same notary public. |
