PAU sports meet from Feb 23

Ludhiana, January 30
The eighth All-India Inter-Agricultural Sports and Games Meet organised by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will be held at Punjab Agricultural University from February 23-26.

The Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, and Director, Students Welfare, Dr Tejwant Singh, presided over the meeting of the working committee of the meet today. He said around 1,550 players of 38 agricultural universities from all over the country would participate in the meet.

The Director-General, ICAR, Dr Mangla Rai, has been invited to inaugurate the meet, while the PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh, will preside over the inaugural 
function.

The PAU Deputy Director (Sports) and hockey Olympian, Mr Ramandeep Singh Grewal, said there would athletics (men and women), volleyball (men and women), handball (men), basketball (men), lawn tennis and badminton (men) and table tennis (men and women) events. He also added that a special cultural programme would be presented to entertain the players on February 26.

Rajinder pockets prize of Rs 1.35 lakh

Rajinder Kaur, a student of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, brought fame to her alma mater as well as the state when she won a gold medal in a national cycling tournament held in Chennai recently.

Rajinder Kaur, who already has a number of medals in her kitty, added another feather in her cap by winning top honours in this prestigious tournament in which as many as 18 teams from across the country took part. She emerged triumphant in the 70 km road race massed start and pocketed a cash prize of Rs 1.35 lakh for her stupendous performance.

Ms Manju Chawla, Principal of Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Gujarkhan Campus, congratulated Rajinder Kaur and her coach, Ms Harjinder Kaur, for bringing fame to the college. She also wished Rajinder Kaur the best of luck for the forthcoming National Games to be held in Assam.

Zira college in semis

Ludhiana, January 30
Thanks to fine batting by Gurpreet (48), Sagar (45) and an equally valuable contribution with the ball by Gurbtej (4 for 15) helped Government College, Zira, to register four-wicket win over AD College, Dharmkot, and ensured a berth in the semifinal of the Panjab University Inter-College Cricket Tournament (B Division) being played on the GTB National College ground, Dakha, near here today.

AD College won the toss and scored 174 runs for eight wickets. Government College, Zira, achieved the target, losing six wickets in 32.5 overs.
