Environment fest at MCM DAV

Chandigarh, February 7
Dr AR Kidwai, Governor of Haryana, inaugurated the Environment Fest organised by the Environment Society of MCM DAV College for Women here today.

The annual festival was organised in collaboration with “Saplings-care we share”, an NGO found by the students of the Centre for environment and vocational studies, PU.

Dr Kidwai congratulated the college as a ‘progressive institution’ and stressed on the ‘importance of knowledge and modernisation’. An exhibition was put up by the students of the college. Handmade paper bags, shagun envelops, bookmarks, file folders, greeting cards etc. painted with vegetable colors, were presented for exhibition and sale. The Punjab Energy and Development Agency (PEDA) demonstrated economical methods of tapping solar energy for domestic use to the students through a mobile van presentation. The Environment Society of India Sector 11 setup an education exhibition through posters and photographs.

The event was marked with enthusiasm of students and the faculty who sported green attires for the day. The environment Society of the college has vowed to sweep the use of polythene off the campus. Jute and paper bags should be provided to the students for this purpose. The students were educated about the importance of Wild Life Conservation through a 53 min. documentary 'Nagarahole-Tales from an Indian Jungle'. A Rock Concert was also organised by the Environment Society in the college Black Strings, a rock band from PU performed at the fest, which culminated with a Jam session for the volunteers.

The winners of the day include: Uday Thakur, Nistha, Kirti and Prashansha, Amandeep, Trarjani, Nishant, Umang, Harpal, Shweta, Madhuri, Aarti Puri, Araf Hayat Narang, Pulkit and Joyshree Dev.

Ishwar Singh Director Environment, Forest Department Chandigarh gave away the prizes for various competitions.

Blood donation camp organised

The NSS wing of Government College for Girls Sector 11 here organised a Blood Donation Camp in collaboration with the Blood Bank Society of P.G.I. Chandigarh today. Dr M.S. Bains, Director NSS, Panjab University inaugurated the camp and congratulated the donors and organisers for their noble endeavour. Principal Dr Upinder Mehra, the guest of honour encouraged the students to be a part of this noble cause. More than 150 units of blood were donated by the volunteers of the college. On this occasion Poster-Making and Slogan Writing Competitions were also organised on the theme of blood donation. The prize winners include: Ritika, Hema, Vikas, Meena, Madhu, Harneet and Deepika.

Workshop on Psychology

A workshop on Roschach Ink Blot test, an important projective technique of psychological assessment was organised by the Department of Psychology, DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh. Dr Adarsh Kohli, Additional Prof, Department of Psychiatry, PGIMER, Chandigarh, an expert in field of clinical psychology, introduced the post graduate and graduate students to the technique. The student activity participated by filling up the response sheets, which were subsequently interpreted and analysed by the expert. It facilitated the students to have an insight into their personalities, conflicts, complexes and its related dimensions. The workshop was also a success in introducing the students about this efficient diagnostic technique, useful for them as future trained psychologists.

High-spirited show by toddlers

Chandigarh, February 6
Tiny tots of The British School, Panchkula/Mohali, presented an impressive show during their annual function held at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18, here, today.

Mr S.S. Dhillon, Chief Administrator, HUDA, was the chief guest while Mr K.K. Khandelwal, Labour Commissioner, was the guest of honour. The programme started with the lighting of a lamp followed by a welcome speech.

The cultural bonanza started with the Ganesh vandana followed by a welcome song which represented national integrity and unity.

The tiny tots sang their all-time favourite nursery rhymes ‘Old Macdonald’, ‘Tota Hum Main’ and ‘Where is Thumbkin’. The children danced to the scintillating numbers and performed dandia dance.

Fairy tales were enacted by children with utmost perfection and coordination.

The grand finale ‘Fusion of Moksh’ was a breathtaking presentation followed by Irish and Spanish numbers.

To apprise the parents and guests of the school’s achievements, Ms Geetika Sethi, Director of the school, read out the school report.

The British School is the first school in North India having affiliation to the IGCSE through University of Cambridge.

'Phulkari' weaves cultural magic

Chandigarh, February 6
A musical event, “Phulkari”, was organised by students of Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and Computer Sciences here today. Mr Harinder Bhambri, secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, was the chief guest and Mr Sandeep Behl, president, District Youth Congress Committee, Fatehgarh Sahib, was the guest of honour. Punjabi pop singer Manmohan Waris, Jeet Jagjit and Jelly were the star attractions.

Ms Shalini Gupta, director, DBIMCS, said an industrial survey had revealed that music had been helpful in enhancing productivity in many industries.

In the afternoon session, Mr Joginder Singh, director of a radio station in Toronto, was the chief guest while Mr Paramraj Umaranangal, SSP, and Mr Dhillon, DSP, Fatehgarh Sahib, were the guests of honour.

Dr Gupt honoured

A literary appraisal of Dr D.S. Gupt’s anthology of poems titled, ‘Talash Zindagi Ki :Khnadaron mein’ was organised by Hindi Department of Government College, Sector 11, here on Sunday. Mr Radhey Shyam, Director, Haryana Sahitya Akademi, was the chief guest on the occasion. He also inaugurated a book exhibition on Hindi poetry and appreciated the informative literature displayed by the librarians Mrs. Renu Oberoi and Mrs. Jaspal Kaur.

Dr D.S. Gupt said that his anthology of poems reflected his feelings about contemporary situations, nationalism, humour, alienation and creativity. A newsletter prepared by Bhupinder Singh, Principal, College of Commerce and Business Administration, Sector 19, Dr Aruna and Dr Poonam of Hindi Department was also released on the occasion Dr. Meera Gutam, head of the Hindi Department, Kurukshetra University, dilated upon various aspects of Gupt’s poetry and categorised it as a fine piece of literature.

Principal Bhupinder Singh read a paper entitled ‘Psychological Approach to Dr. D.S. Gupt’s Anthology of Hindi Poems.’

He said in Gupt’s poetry “we find Keatsian intensity while he describes the poetic process. Dr D.S. Gupt as a modern poet is concerned with the contemporary problems and makes apt use of symbols to describe the alienation of modern times focusing on zeitgeist or spirit of the times.”
