Jairoop, Steffy rewrite records

Jairoop Riar of Patiala House established a new record (21.28 mts) in the discus throw event (above 15 age group) while Steffy Arora also broke the old record in the 400 metres race (under 15) in 1:12:62 minutes on the second day of the 28th Annual Inter-House Athletic Meet held at Yadavindra Public School here today.

Gurusar Sadhar boys win in handball

Chandigarh, February 6
GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, today registered a convincing win over GN Khalsa College, Abohar, by 28-07 on the inaugural day of Panjab University Inter-College Handball (Men) Tournament. The tournament is being played on knockout basis at PU grounds here.

Jatinder Singh (10), Ranjeet (7) and Gursharan Singh (7) were the main contributors for GHG Khalsa College while Kuldeep Singh (4) was the major contributor for the losers.

Meanwhile, GNN College, Doraha (Ludhiana) defeated GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, 41-32 in the PU Inter-College Kabaddi Tournament for men here today. — TNS

Technogym inaugurated at Sector 42 complex

Chandigarh, February 6
The imported Technogym at the Sector 42 sports complex was formally inaugurated by the Punjab Governor-cum-UT Administrator, General SF Rodrigues (Retd) here today. It was installed at the newly built gym a year ago.

Access rights to this gym were restricted either to the trainees of Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy or to senior functionaries of the Sports Department.

Joint Director of Sports JPS Sidhu informed that the Technogym purchased at a cost of Rs 1 crore would be used exclusively by trainees of the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy and Chandigarh’s international hockey and football players. A similar Technogym installed at the Lake Sports Complex is open to the general public.

After the inauguration, General Rodrigues said the Administration had provided world-class facilities and it was now for the coaches, players and trainers to make use of these properly. “The gym should be put to optimum use," said the Governor.

The Governor was accompanied by the Finance-cum-Sports Secretary, Mr SK Sandhu, Additional Director-cum-Sports Director, Mr Inderjit Singh Sandhu, Chief Engineer VK Bhardwaj, DPI (Schools) Mr Ashwani Kumar, Joint Director Sports, Mr JPS Sidhu, and Olympian Tarlochan Singh Bawa.

Showing keen interest, the Governor himself used the treadmill walking machine for some time.

The machines installed at the air-conditioned hall are leg extension, multi hip, chest press, lat machine, cross-over cables, multipower, adjustable bench, reclined bike, less press, abdominal crunch, leg curt, rotary torso and excite wave.

According to Mr IS Sandhu, these machines had been used in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics besides the 2006 Winter Olympics.

The national campers who attend camps organised at the Sector 42 complex would also be allowed to utilise these facilities. The floor of the gym has been carpeted with 'Flotex’ floors imported from England at a cost of Rs 12.5 lakh.

Earlier, the Governor was given a warm welcome by the Chandigarh Sports Department and the chief guest was also introduced to the trainees of the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy.

Shootingball meet

Chandigarh, February 6
Lakhwinder Singh of the Punjab regional office and Kode Shah of Faridkot district were adjudged the best players in the sixth Food Craft Institute (FCI) Inter-District Shootingball Tournament. The tournament was held at the Sector 46 sports complex here today. Ms Urmil Naval, DGM(Vig), FCI, Chandigarh, gave away prizes to the winners.

The FCI, RO, Punjab, also registered an exciting win over the last year’s runners-up, the Faridkot team.
