Policy matters
Pervin Malhotra

Pervin MalhotraQ I have nearly eight years of experience in an NGO. I am interested in applying for IIM’s programme on public policy management. Can you please give me the details and a list of some other institutes that offer such programmes? I have taken the CAT and got a decent score.

— Sharat Kataruka

A IIM-Ahmedabad offers a rigorous 1-year full time residential programme in Public Management and Policy which focuses on public policy formulation and implementation, financial regulation, infrastructure development and public enterprise management.

This programme is ideally suited for bright, motivated mid-career civil servants, managers, administrators, and NGO professionals aspiring for leadership positions in management and administration. Given your background it will definitely serve as an excellent add-on for enhancing your career prospects.

The best part is the international exchange component designed to give an exposure to work practices abroad. It will help you understand the macro-economic concepts and do a SWOT analysis of the host country in terms of governance and policy. This is essential if India is to emerge as a key player in the context of globalisation.

A bachelor’s degree with decent CAT/ GMAT / GREscores and work experience of seven or more years is the base eligibility for this programme. Carnegie Mellon University, George Washington University, Geoorgetown University, Ohio State University, University of Geneva and University of Texas, Austin, are the potential partners for this programme. Poplar choice

Q I have a piece of land on which we grow poplars. I would like to grow some high-yielding profitable crop on the side. Can you please suggest some add-on courses that would help equip me with the necessary knowledge. What are the prospects of growing and exporting aromatic plants?

— Jaisingh

A The nascent flavours and fragrance industry in India is slowly gaining muscle. This hush-hush industry is not only developing downstream processes but is also beefing up its exports in a bid to grow the Rs 5000 crore market for fragrances. The Indian flavours and fragrance market is valued at around $225 million and exports Rs 165 crore worth of aromatic oils a year.

India ranks third in volume and second in value of the world trade in aromatic oils. So, there is tremendous potential for growing your business.

  • Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre, Makrand Nagar, Kannauj, is offering a Training Programme on “Cultivation & Primary Distillation of Aromatic Plants” in February for those who are interested in increasing their yield and getting into exports. The application deadline is February 15, 2007. For details log onto www.ffdcindia.org

  • Similarly, from time to time, the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) offers a Certificate Course on Medicinal and Aromatic plants and holds workshops for farmers. You can keep track of their latest training schedule by logging onto www.cimap.res.in

  • The University of Madras, Institute of Correspondence Education, Chepauk, Chennai, (www.universityofmadras-ice.ac.in) offers a 6-month Certificate in Herbal Farming and 1-year PG Diplomas Medicinal & Aromatic Plants through distance learning, which you may find useful.

Scope in software

Q I have completed postgraduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) last year. Now I am free. Where can I apply for a job.

— Sanjeev Kumar

A If you have acquired good software skills, you can start work in programming.

If you have developed a good base in hardware and if you acquire some relevant certification i.e. MCSE etc, you can get networking and maintenance jobs. Even technical processing jobs in call centres may be a good bet at the entry level.

You can also look at marketing and sales of IT hardware and software products.
