Inter-college extravaganza delights onlookers

Ludhiana, February 11
The inter-college contests at the Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women, concluded here yesterday. The two-day extravaganza witnessed multifarious events ranging from Indian classical dance to skit and histrionics. Dr Jaswinder Bhalla, a leading Punjabi comedian, was the chief guest on this occasion.

Indian classical dance, phulkari, fashion sketching, embroidery, salad making, rangoli, skits and histrionics evoked good response from the audience.

Students came up with creative ideas and innovations in various contests. In the salad competition, all contestants vied with one another to offer the best food items replete with nutritive values. In the skit and histrionics category, contestants ignited the emotions of the audience while depicting the most deplorable practice of female foeticide and degenerating moral values in contemporary society.

While addressing the guests, the chief guest, Dr Bhalla, exhorted the students to remain sensitive and understand the moral values in life. He also told them to actualise their potentialities.

The dances were marked by gaiety, liveliness, rich imagery, symbolism and well-coordinated dance movements. In phulkari, embroidery and rangoli competitions, intricately-designed patterns bore testimony to the creative urges, aesthetic sense and talents of the students which were appreciated by the onlookers. Dr Madanjit Kaur Sahota, college Principal, stressed that women folk should explore their identity and assume their rightful place as the superb creations of the universe.

President Mr Swaran Singh proposed a vote of thanks and the programme concluded with the National Anthem sung by the college choir.

Training course on sustaining natural resources

A three-week training programme on sustainable conservation and management of natural resources concluded at Punjab Agricultural University here. Twelve scientists from different agricultural universities participated in this programme which was organized by the Soil Department's Centre of Advanced Studies in Soil Sciences.

Speaking at the concluding function, the Dean, College of Agriculture, Dr GS Chahal, said effective management of natural resources was important for sustainable agriculture vis-à-vis food security of the country. Scientists should develop effective ways and techniques of soil and water conservation. Director of the Centre and Head, Department of Soils, Dr V.Beri, said the Centre had organized 19 training courses for scientists of different agricultural universities and ICAR Institute to impart training on latest techniques of soil and water conservation.

Kids perform well on annual day

Ludhiana, February 11
DAV Public School wore a festive look as the kindergarten school presented colourful items on the annual day held here yesterday. Mr R.S. Patial, Manager-cum-RD, presided over the function.

The function began with Ganesh stuti. The children performed well at their spectacular circus show, dance and choreography. Their performances depicted various festivals and seasons well. The English play “Wooden Plate” and dance drama “Cindrella” captivated the audience. Mr Patial delivered a motivational speech and appreciated the efforts of the students. — OC
