64,000 cops on poll duty

A total of 64,000 police personnel have been deployed across Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections, the Director-General of Police, Mr R.S. Gill, said today.

Of these, 50,000 are from Punjab and 14,000 from para military forces. Of the total 10,262 polling locations, 1,258 and 3,065 have been identified as hypersensitive and sensitive, respectively.

It has been decided that locations with single or two polling stations will be provided at least three securitymen led by a Head Constable.

At sensitive polling locations, the number of security personnel will vary from five to nine. Locations with three or more polling stations and identified as sensitive will be provided at least half a section of paramilitary forces.

Sensitive polling stations will have a Head Constable and two constables while hypersensitive stations will see intensive patrolling.

Candidates of recognised parties have been given five security personnel while candidates of unrecognised parties and Independents have been given two gunmen each.

Three companies have been kept reserved at the disposal of the DGP, one each at the disposal of Zone IGPs, two companies each at the disposal of Range DIGs, one company each at the district headquarters and a platoon each at the 89 subdivisional headquarters.
