Q I am very keen to make my career in the financial services sector. However, I am not too sure what are the roles of a financial analyst, financial planner, credit analyst and management analyst. Please guide.

— Anil Khanna

A In simple words, here is a brief bare-bone description of what each of them does:

Management Analysts conduct organisational studies and evaluations, design systems and procedures, conduct work simplification and measurement studies and prepare operations and procedure manuals to assist the company’s management in operating more efficiently and effectively.

Credit Analysts analyse current credit data and financial statements of individuals or firms to determine the degree of risk involved in extending credit or lending money. Prepare reports with this credit information for use in decision-making.

Financial Analysts conduct quantitative analyses of information affecting investment programs of public or private institutions.

Financial /Planners/Advisors advise clients on financial plans utilizing their knowledge of tax and investment strategies, securities, insurance, pension plans, and real estate. They assess the client’s assets, liabilities, cash flow, insurance coverage, tax status, and financial objectives to design viable investment strategies.

Q Can you please tell me about the selection procedure for NIFT’s Bachelor of design programme? Is the degree offered by NIFT equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in case I want to take the CAT or apply for a B-school subsequently?

— Chetna Pasrija

A Admission to full-time professional courses at NIFT — both at the undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels — is on the basis of multi-level entrance exams. And yes, the Bachelor’s programme now offered by NIFT is a full-fledged degree, so you can happily take the CAT or apply for any other PG course in India or abroad.

There are two objective-type tests in the first stage of the entrance exam for the Bachelor’s Programme — Design (Fashion, Textile, Leather, Accessories, Knitwear, Communication).

I) The first paper, General Ability Test (GAT) comprises various sub-tests:

Besides the usual questions on addition, multiplication, division, fractions, percentage, work and task, ratio and proportion, distance, profit & loss etc you must also be proficient at class 10-level Algebra and Geometry, etc.

2) Communication Ability section will test your English language skills. You should focus on practicing synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spellings, etc.

3) English Comprehension: In this section you will have to comprehend a situation from a given passage

4) Analytical Ability: inference and logic from the given information.

5) And finally, the Business Domain Test is aimed to evaluate your knowledge and awareness about the Fashion Industry, Designers and Art & Culture.

II) The second paper, CAT, tests your skill, design abilities power of observation, innovation and creativity through questions in drawing and sketching. Use of colour and illustration is an important aspect of this test.

If you clear this stage, then you will be called for a Situation Test which is a hands-on test to evaluate your skills and innovative ability in handling different types of material in a given situation.
