CJM orders removal of barricades
Valentine Day gift for traders
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, February 14
It was a triumph of sorts for the business fraternity of Sector 7, here today, with the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Anshu Shukla, ordering removal of all barricades immediately all over the city. The businessmen led by market president BB Kochhar had filed a writ petition in her court on February 12 seeking removal of the barricades.

The decision has come as a Valentine Day gift for the businessmen who celebrated the evening distributing sweets in the whole market. While the businessmen rejoiced the return of business to the markets, the residents, too, had reason to cheer the decision.

"We are not against the streamlining of traffic but this can be done by installing traffic lights and posting cops at busy intersections. Closing the entry is no solution and the police was taking the easy way out. Our contention was that the closure was having a fallout on our business with sales down by almost 60 per cent," Mr Kochhar said.

While the market was initially fighting to save its business, a number of markets’ associations across the city also joined their crusade against closure of entry points as did other resident welfare bodies.

While the shopkeepers had earlier appealed to the police to reconsider its decision, a bandh call had been given after persuasion had failed and the entry from Sector 8 had been closed overnight. During yesterday's bandh, the shopkeepers had uprooted tiles to remove the blockade.

Also, the first meeting of the committee of businessmen and representatives of the residents welfare bodies constituted by the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Neerja Shekhar, is slated to meet tomorrow. The committee was constituted after yesterday's protest and the DC's assurance to relook into the matter.

Music band leaves lasting impression
Aditi Tandon
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 14
Seldom does this city let its hair down. But with the Ozomatli — a celebrated Latin hip hop music band - in concert, it couldn’t but sway to the rhythms of love. As the two-time Grammy award winning troupe from the US took control of the space of performance this evening, a dull and drab DAV auditorium stood transformed into something like a dream concert setting. What followed was pure joy that came wrapped in the colours of love. An added dose of excitement came from the fact that it was St Valentine’s Day.

And the band in concert knew that well. Not even once during the hour and a half long performance did they impose their musical intelligence on the masses. Theirs’ was a humble concert - one that people related to, one that they madly jived at. At a point during the show, the organisers had to marshall all their resources to ensure the frenetic crowd did not go awry. Losing control, though, was permitted and encouraged.

No wonder then that Ozomatil - which has participated in the US tours with Santana, David Matthews and Lanny Kravitz - seemed to love every bit of their offering in Chandigarh. “It is our first time here and we are loving it,” said 10 members of the group that just recorded an album guided by producer KC Porter.

The album apart, Ozomatli’s edge lies in their ability to bring the best of the world in their uniquely-individualistic performance. Each member of the band contributes a precious little to the concert, which then becomes a concert of world music. Even today at DAV where youths from slums had also managed to sneak in, the Ozomatli offered their best. It was as though the gathering was maturing with their concert. It was unusually-disciplined during the first half of the show and unusually-unregimented for the rest of it.

Also jiving away to glory along with all the visiting American diplomats were the principal of DAV College, Director Tourism, Chandigarh and other elite of the city. For the US Embassy which had to change the venue of the show at the last minute, the evening would surely be a memorable one.

The chief guest for the evening was none other than Nek Chand whose Rock Garden has inspired US diplomats for long.

Rock show rocks Valentine’s Day
Tribune News service

Chandigarh, February 14
On the day of love, its festivities spin around love and its expression that traditionally mark Valentine’s Day. But gone are those days when one would associate only cards, gifts, flowers and romantic music with it. Instead saying it differently is the latest mantra. Perhaps keeping the buzzword ‘change in mind’, ‘Valentine Massacre’, a rock show was held today at ‘Drop In’ in Sector 34.

Organised by Megahertz in association with CITCO and Department of Tourism, UT, the show was aimed at the youth working in the numerous corporate offices in the sector.

Curiosity ran high at the venue so much that much before the show had started, a large number of people gathered around the venue to witness the show.

Two local bands, 21st Street Rebels and Shell Shocked performed some of their own compositions including ‘3- Chord’, ‘Another game’ and ‘The time is now’ and a few other singles such as ‘Paranoid’, ‘Holiday’ and ‘Wake me up’ et al.
