Plastic surgeons share views on cleft care

Talking on the role of stem cell transplantation in deformities - cleft lip and cleft palate - among new born babies, Dr R.K. Sharma, Head of the Department, plastic surgery, PGI, claimed that possibilities were there but not even a single country had yielded favourable results in the field. He said there were possibilities that the stem cell transplantation could also play a major role in treating the deformities.

Plastic surgeons shared their experiences besides enriching their knowledge about surgical fraternity with latest professional skill, devices, management protocols and recent advances with respect to cleft lip, palate and craniofacial anomalies at the sixth annual conference on ”Expanding the Horizons of Cleft Care” to be organised by the Indian Society of Cleft Lip, Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies”, here today.

About 300 delegates from the country and 20 delegates from SAARC countries who attended that conference expressed their discussed various aspects of the cleft and the craniofacial anomalies, recent advances and management protocols, here today.

Dr I.T. Jackson, a renowned craniofacial Surgeon from USA, discussed state of the art surgical techniques for complex cranifacial abnormalities. Dr Robert Sader, Craniomaxillofacial Surgeon from Germany shared his experience regarding the intricacies involved in the management of these deformities. Dr Peter Mossey from UK discussed about the Indian scenario and the role of WHO in addressing craniofacial anomalies.

Other speakers who spoke include Dr K. Shridhar from Chennai, Dr Mukund Reddy from Hyderabad and Dr K.S. Rao from Mangalore. Dr H.S. Adenwala, a pioneer in cleft surgery in India, discussed about the future prospects for such patients.

Members of various specialities including orthodontists, speech therapists, ENT surgeons and pediatricians participated in the conference. Dr Maya Sahni, from USA, discussed the problems regarding feeding of infants with cleft lip and palate.

Dr N. Khandelwal from PGI, Chandigarh, highlighted the radiological evaluation of craniofacial anomalies. Various psychosocial and rehabilitative aspects of the patients, suffering from these disorders, were discussed by Dr A. Awasthi.

Talk on fungal infections at GMCH

Chandigarh, February 16
Eminent microbiologists discussed on "Nosocomial Fungal Infections" in country at continuing medical education (CME), organised by the department of microbiology, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Speakers delivered lecturers on various issues relating to “Nosocomial Fungal Infections”, the topic taken up for the first time in the country at the conference organised by the Hospital Infection Society of India.

Prof T.D. Chugh, from Sri Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, spoke on "Overview/introduction of Nosocomial Fungal Infections" while Prof A. Chakrabarti, PGI, Chandigarh elaborated on "Epidemiology of Nosocomial Candidiasis".

The topic "Outbreaks due to Mycelial Fungi" was covered by Dr R. Iyer from Global Hospital, Hyderabad. Dr Jagdish Chander, head of the microbiology department, GMCH, enlightened on the "Role of Fungi in Surgical Wound Infections" and Dr W. Curtis White from Michigan, USA, spoke on "Fungi in Health Care Environment".

Lectures and discussions on "Is Invasive Zygomycosis a Community Acquired Infection only?" were the parts of presentations by Dr M.R. Shivaprakash, PGI. The topic "Fungal Infections in ICUs" was discussed by Dr K.K. Gombar, from GMCH, while Dr Ratna Rao, Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad focused on "Fungal Infections in Transplant Recipients".

Rescheduled athletic meet on Feb 21

Chandigarh, February 16
Two-day Inter school Athletic meet (under 17 and 19 for boys and girls), which was postponed due to inclement weather conditions will now be held on February 21 and 22 at Sports Complex, Sector 46 here.

According to Mr J.S. Basota, Sports Secretary (Boys) and Ms Indra Beniwal, Sports Secretary (Girls), all the duties and event schedule will remain the same as circulated earlier.

Prize Distribution function will be organised at 4 pm on the February 22 at the same venue. The decision was taken in the meeting of Sports Secretaries with Mr Ashwani Kumar, D.P.I(s), Chandigarh Administration.
