Lucknow, February 18
Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has alleged pressure being mounted by “foreign powers” behind the demand for the dismissal of his government.
Terming Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of being the weakest Prime Minister, he charged him with compromising India’s foreign policy that his government had opposed, leading to the situation where the Congress-led Central Government was contemplating dismissing his government.
While the Chief Minister today warned the Congress of “dire consequences” if it dared to dismiss his government, BSP chief Mayawati, on the other hand, threatened to launch an agitation against the Congress if it continued to “dilly-dally” the decision to dismiss the Samajwadi Party government.
Addressing a massive Lodh Maha Sammelan in Mahoba district, Mr Yadav lashed out at all political parties that had labelled his government “unconstitutional”. He claimed that he had the support of 247 MLAs when he took the oath of office in September, 2003.
Reiterating that the Supreme Court judgment had not called his government unconstitutional, he spoke of pressure from some “foreign powers” behind the mounting demand for the dismissal of his government.
Another day of hectic political activity saw the swinging of the political pendulum between support and opposition of the Samajwadi party government.
Addressing mediapersons, BSP president Mayawati charged the Congress with dithering in the matter even after Governor T.V. Rajeswar submitted his report to the Central Government.
Asking the Congress of not succumbing to the pressure “being mounted by the Left parties” she reminded it that it was leading the UPA and not otherwise.
Disclosing her plans of meeting
the Governor on Monday, she said she would submit a memorandum to him to ensure an immediate implementation of the Supreme Court judgment else her party would launch a stir against the Congress after its March 1 rally in Lucknow.
Despite its major constituent, the BJP, demanding the dismissal of the Mulayam Singh Yadav government, NDA convener George Fernandes came out in defence of the SP government in Lucknow.
He said if the Congress took such a step he would oppose it, as it would be “undemocratic and unconstitutional”. He was in the town in connection with a meeting of the Samata Party.
