Ratlam: 48 more bones dug out, 2 held

Ratlam (MP), February 18
A day after the remains of newborns and foetuses were found at a missionary hospital here, more bones were dug out from the vicinity today even as two persons, including the Superintendent of the facility, were arrested.

Ratlam Christian Hospital's Superintendent Patience Williams and sweeper Jagram were arrested for allegedly concealing births through the secret disposal of bodies, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Varun Kapoor said.

Gynaecologist Venu Gopalan was also detained for questioning in connection with the recovery of 391 pieces of bones of three to four newborns and foetuses from a pit behind the hospital's operation theatre yesterday.

A total of 48 pieces of bones had been dug out from the area around the pit since this morning after Jagram confessed to burying the remains on the instructions of the hospital authorities. One of the bones apparently belongs to an adult, while some were of animals, Mr Kapoor said.

Claiming that burying bodies in hospital premises was against the law, Kapoor said the area in the search would be widened if the need arose. Samples of bones were sent to the State Medico-legal Institute in Bhopal and a committee, comprising doctors and environment experts, had started a probe.

As the search was conducted and hospital records seized, Bajrang Dal workers staged a protest and sought action against the guilty. — PTI
