Free cosmetic surgery camp from March 3
Ludhiana, February 19 Giving this information at a news conference here today, Directors of the hospital - Dr H.S. Bedi, Dr B.S. Sekhon and Dr Harjeet Singh - said a 24-member Canadian team, led by Dr Kimit Rai, paediatric cosmetic surgeon in Vancouver, Canada, along with the highly skilled faculty of Ludhiana Mediciti, would perform corrective and cosmetic surgeries on children from March 3 to 13 absolutely free of charge. Elaborating on the unique venture and first of its kind in this part of the country, Dr Sekhon disclosed that already around 100 patients with cosmetic deformities had registered themselves for free surgery. “Most of these are children suffering from the debilitating disease called cleft-lip and cleft-palate. In this condition, there is a gross deformity on the face of the child with a gap in the upper lip. This produces a grotesque deformity which not only makes it difficult to eat for the child, but also makes him and his family a social outcast.” According to Dr Bedi, unlike other free or concessional camps, where the patients are made to pay hidden charges under different pretexts, the surgical procedures at the camp will be performed free of charges and the expenditure on medicines, food and hospital stay will also be borne by the institution. Several other members of the faculty at Ludhiana Mediciti, including Dr Nandini K. Bedi, paediatric surgeon, Dr Bikramjit Singh Sandhu, general surgeon, Dr Gaurav Sachdeva, Head of Internal Medicine, will be complementing the team of surgeons and supporting staff from Canada. Dr Sachdeva said along with the surgeries, the team would educate and train Indian doctors in complicated and highly skillful procedures of cosmetic surgery with the main aim of achieving long-term self-sufficiency in this specialised field in the developing countries. The facility of registration for cosmetic surgery camp is available on 0161-5099500-05. |
