A PRTC bus of the Sangrur depot collided with a tempo on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway this morning, resulting in the death of all six tempo occupants. Bus driver Balbir Singh was also killed. Some passengers were injured.
The occupants of the tempo (PB 10 AM 0341) died on the spot. The mishap occurred when the driver of the bus (PB 11-S- 5478), on its way to Jalandhar, lost control.
Those killed were Bharpur Singh and Onkar Singh of Badowal, Jeeta of Datewal village, Hardip Singh of Siarh, Babbu and driver of the tempo, Teji. The injured are Gurmit Singh, Hardev Singh, Kuldip Singh and Happy. They were rushed to the government hospital in Amritsar. Deputy Commissioner Kirandip Singh Bhullar said senior officers, including SDM of Baba Bakala, rushed to the accident site on getting news of the accident.
The Jalandhar-Amritsar highway has claimed a number of lives. On June 2, 2004, four persons died in a head-on collision between an Indica car and a truck. At least 19 devotees on way to Dera Baba Jaimal Singh were killed and 41 injured in a collision between a Swaraj Mazda and a truck on April 1, 2005, at Beas. According to an estimate, at least 100 persons have been killed on this killer stretch in the past one-and-a-half
years.
