India can spring surprises,
says Yash Pal
Ludhiana, February 24 These observations were made here today by Yash Pal Sharma, member of the Indian squad that emerged world champions in 1983. He was in the city to preside over the prize distribution function of annual athletics meet of Arya College. In a conversation with the media, Yash Pal, former national selector, said that though the Indian team was a balanced one with a number of established stars in its ranks, they lacked self confidence and 'killer's instinct'. They failed miserably against the Caribbeans and then lost to South Africa. Yash Pal said that, however, the men in blue made a fine comeback in the home series against West Indies and Sri Lanka which would certainly work as morale booster in the World Cup, he opined. In reply to a question as to what did he expect from the Indian bowlers in West Indies, Yash Pal said that playing conditions as well as pitches there, are similar to those here in India and they could help their side to come out triumphant. "Indian spinners were set to play a major role in the team's performance during the next world cup," he added. When asked about the upcoming seamer and Ludhiana lad, Gagandeep Toor's future who had not found a place in the North Zone contingent for the Deodhar Trophy despite his consistent performance, Yash Pal replied that there was no reason for the young bowler be disappointed. He had a long career ahead of him. He should strive hard to find a place in the national squad. He cited the example of Saurav Ganguly who with the sheer determination, made a comeback to the Indian team. Yash Pal was also honoured by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association on this occasion for bringing glory to the city. Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, senior vice-president and chairman, selection committee, Punjab, Mr Pawan Pandey and Mr Naresh Marwaha, secretary and joint secretary, respectively, of the association and its member, Mr Subhash Dawar, presented a shawl and momento to the former cricketer as a token of appreciation. |
