Farmers use phones for queries
Ludhiana February 28 Addressing the participants, additional director of Extension Education Dr Sat Pal Mehra appreciated the increasing trend among farmers of the state in dialing toll-free No. 1551 of call centre to get solutions for their agricultural queries and problems. Dr Mehra emphasised the need for providing solutions on phone only after thorough study of the problem so that chances of mis-communication could be reduced. He added that only those recommendations be suggested that had been included in the Package of Practices prepared by the experts of the university after thorough research and deliberations. He also called for suggesting brands of different companies for insecticides, pesticides, etc. Soil scientist and in charge, Plant Disease Clinic, Dr Didar Singh Bhatti educated the trainees on depletion of micronutrients in the soil. He exhorted them to refer to university publications regarding various queries of farmers. Dr Raghbir Singh Uppal talked about the functioning of Krishi Vigyan Kendras working under the university system. Dr H.S. Bajwa, coordinator of the course, proposed a vote of thanks. |
Florida university don visits PAU
Ludhiana, February 28 Dr Judge emphasised the need for widening the cooperation between PAU and the University of Florida. She also delivered a lecture, "Research and Educational Opportunities in Application of Remote Sensing in Agriculture", during her visit to the university. Dr Aulakh while describing the agricultural development in the state, said PAU had played an important role in making the farmers aware of the current problems like depleting water table, lack of processing facilities for the crops and assured marketing etc. He said the university organized kisan melas - mega events of the university - twice a year to provide farmers knowledge about latest technology pertaining to kharif and rabi crops. He added that seed of new crop varieties was sold to farmers during these melas and the farmers preferred to buy the seed from PAU only. Appreciating the role of the media, he said it was playing a significant role in making the farmers aware of the current agricultural development in the state. Speaking on the depleting water table, Dr Aulakh that it was a very serious problem and it could be overcome by sowing crops which consume less water. PAU has recommended that paddy should be sown after June 15 as it needs less water and is in the interest of farmers. Talking about Bt cotton, Dr Aulakh said Bt cotton had reduced the use of pesticides. Highlighting the research activities of the university, Dr BS Dhillon said PAU had developed more than 550 crop varieties so far. The farmers are adopting the latest research technologies evolved by the university. He said PAU had top priorities in research which are biotechnology, agricultural processing, integrated management of pests, diseases, weeds, nutrients and energy, farm machinery for precision and cost effective farming. He said a special grant of Rs 100 crore would be used for these priorities and strengthening the university laboratories for research work. Appreciating the role of PAU for the development of state agriculture, Dr Jasmeet Judge, Director, Remote Sensing Centre, University of Florida, said the collaboration between the University of Florida and PAU would be strengthened. She later visited all the laboratories and the Museum of Social History. |

Ludhiana, February 28 Pentasoft quiz by 'Cadbury'
A Pentasoft quiz sponsored by 'Cadbury' Pvt. Ltd. was held in KVM School. The quiz was related to two most important subjects, Maths and Science. About 425 students participated in it of which seven students have been awarded gold medal, seven of them have won silver medals and eight students have won bronze medal along with merit certificates and gift hampers. The principal S.C. Saxena quipped that the students get exposure to develop and enhance their learning skills through such contests. Incharge of the middle section Sonia Verma also appreciated the efforts of Maths and Science teachers specially Jeevan Kaur, Pommy Sharma and Teenu Maniktala for conducting this contest.

Small Wonders Pre-Nursery and Nursery School, Sangat Road, Ludhiana, celebrated annual day in the school premises. Children were dressed up in different costumes and held best of their spirits during the fabulous fancy dress competition. Participants were divided into two categories according to their age. The younger age group (2 to 3years), performed very confidently. Jasmine as Pilot stood first, Navya as Traffic light was second and Manmeet as Bharat-Mata came third. In the higher age group of (3 to 4 Years), Isha as Don got first position, Divyam as Shravan Kumar and Samarth as Doodh Wala bagged second position and Abhisar as Pandit ji walked away with third position. A group of boys performed rhythmically on Bhangara beats. Little ones sang a song "Hum Honge Kamyab" with full spirits. Certificates and Prizes were awarded to students for their academic, sports and cultural achievements. All the participants were given gifts. While distributing the prizes, principal Neeti Dewan said that each child is special and should be awarded a prize so that kids do not feel disappointed. The function was a total success. City students score national rank
Ludhiana, February 28 Sahil Kumar and Navjot Singh, students of Makkar Institute have got 28 and 30 rank respectively in CPT (C.A. entrance test). The other student among the toppers is Deepak Nagpat who has got more than 70 per cent marks with distinction. All the students of Makkar Institute scored very well and got admission in C.A. course. MBA, CIT courses to begin

Ludhiana, February 28 There would be 40 seats in the course and University Grants Commission has granted Rs 22 lakhs for the course. The Panjab University will recognise the course. Colleges at all India Level were selected to contain the course. The college has managed to initiate this course, which will ensure employment. The other three courses which have been granted Rs 17 lakhs by the UGC are, College for Nursery Training, Call Centre Training and Insurance Business. distribution held
Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujjarkhan Campus, celebrated its annual prize distribution today. DPI colleges Punjab, was the chief guest. The programme started with the shabad. Principal Manju Chawla welcomed the guests and read out the achievements of the students in the current session. During this session, 150 students who fared well in internal examination were given certificates and books. The outstanding 105 students of Home Science, Art, music, Central Association Youth Club, writers and speakers and NSS volunteers were also awarded trophies. The best players of the college in different disciplines were awarded. Rajinder for cycling, Rajdeep as best athlete, Neha as an excellent baseball player. Excellence awards for two city colleges
Ludhiana, February 28 Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College and Dayanand Medical College and Hospital were awarded for having best educational facilities, infrastructure and teaching faculty in the region at the ceremony. Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College was awarded the Certificate of Honour along with trophy for excellence in the “engineering” category. GNE Principal Dr Harkirat Kaur Grewal received the award.
