100 Tribune staffers donate blood

Chandigarh, March 8
More than 100 employees of the Tribune group of newspapers, including 14 women, donated blood at a camp organised by the Tribune Employees Union to mark International Women’s Day here today.

Dr Saudamani Bambah, one of the pioneers of the blood donation movement in the country and founder member of the Blood Bank Society at Chandigarh in 1964, inaugurating the camp, lauded the efforts of the union in organising the camp.

Dr Bambah, who herself has donated blood 46 times since 1946 when she was a student of medical college in Cuttack in Orissa, asked the employees to contribute to the upcoming chord bank at the PGI, Chandigarh, also. Dr R.P. Bambah, a trustee of the Tribune group of publications, said the Tribune Employees Union was instrumental in realising the dream of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, the founder of the Tribune Trust, by its selfless endeavour.

Justice S. S. Sodhi (retd), a trustee of The Tribune, and his wife Bonny Sodhi attended the function. Sanjay Hazari, general manager, also sent his best wishes to the organisers.

H. K. Dua, editor-in-chief, The Tribune group of publications, emphasising the need to hold such camps that helped save the lives of mankind, said the union had set an example for other employee organisations. Dua thanked the team of medicos led by Dr Ravneet Kaur and Dr Paramjit Kaur of the Department of Immunohaemotology and Blood Transfusion, Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, for conducting the camp on the Tribune premises.

Jagtar Singh Sidhu, president of the union, said by holding the camp on the International Women’s Day, the union had expressed its solidarity with the cause of women and it was committed to eradicating the discrimination against them in various fields of life also.

Others who visited the camp were A. J. Philip, senior associate editor, The Tribune, O. P. Arora, additional general manager, Naresh Kaushal, editor, Dainik Tribune and G. S. Sidhu, editor, Punjabi Tribune.

Among those who donated blood 20 times or more included Rajeev Manchanda (71), Arun Kaushal (68), Ashok Kumar Sharma (30), Anil Kumar Gupta (29), Shamsher Kumar Verma (28), Surinder Singh (26), Jagtar Singh Sidhu (26) Sukhvinderjit Singh (22), Vijay Saini (22), Bhajan Singh (21), B. S. Jandu 20.

Health package for women

Mohali, March 8
The Fortis Hospital here today announced a special preventive health package for women during March, which covered all aspects of well-being. According to a press note, the cost was reduced by 60 per cent to mark the International Women’s Day. — OC

Landran college lift PTU trophy

Mohali, March 8
Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran, lifted the Punjab Technical University Inter-College trophy beating RIMT, Mandi Gobindgarh, by 73 runs at Rayat cricket ground, Ropar, here yesterday.

Batting first, the CEC scored 185 runs for the loss of one wicket in 25 overs.

Gaurav Kumar and Amandeep Cheema of the CEC made half centuries each.

In reply, RIMT were bundled out for 112.

Gaurav was adjudged man of the match and best batsman of the series, while Amandeep Cheema won the title of man of the series.

Six vigilance officers appointed

Chandigarh, March 8
Vigilance officers (VO) in six key departments have been appointed. The officers will report to chief vigilance officer (CVO) Krishna Mohan in respect of various inquiries and related vigilance matters entrusted to them by the CVO.

The designated officers have been assigned the duties of inquiring into the complaints forwarded by the CVO in a time-bound manner.

They will also be responsible for follow-up action on the inquiry report of the vigilance cell.

Besides, they will collect intelligence on corrupt practices or those likely to be committed by employees and report these to the CVO.

They will keep a close watch on the loopholes in the functioning of the departments concerned and bring the same to the notice of the CVO.

The officers with their designated departments are: Amar Nath - Chandigarh Housing Board; I.S. Sandhu - Estate Office; H.S Kandhola - MC, Chandigarh; M.S Brar - Engineering Department and Department of Architecture; Ankur Garg - DC Office.
