Dairy farming good diversification option

Financial commissioner, state animal husbandry department, dairy development department and fisheries, D.S. Bains today said dairy farming could be a good option for enhancing the income of the farmers and also a good means for diversification.

Bains today visited the 'dairy mela' being organised by the Progressive Dairy Farmers Association (PDFA), Chamber of Punjab Farmers, Punjab Dairy Development Department and Punjab State Animal Husbandry Department in collaboration with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) Ludhiana.

Bains visited the exhibition and all the stalls put up in the mela and was very much impressed to see the rare animals brought by the farmers from various parts of the state.

He observed that this was an excellent beginning by the PDFA which would motivate farmers to rear excellent animals and adopt commercial dairy farming. It would result into the much-needed diversification in the agriculture and the farm income would also be enhanced.

Dr V.K. Taneja, vice-chancellor, GADVASU, said the livestock show was one of the mechanisms to demonstrate potential of livestock and also to share experiences with each other and interaction of farmers with scientists and development officials would help in identifying the problems and suggest solutions.

He pointed out that the farmers were also exposed to new technologies which would help in enhancing productivity of their livestock.

Tomorrow is the last day of mela in which the champion dairy animals of different breeds will be declared. Captain Kanwaljit Singh, Cooperative Minister will distribute the prizes to the champion animals on the concluding function.

Joint campus interviews held

Ludhiana, March 8
The training and placement cell of Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, organised a joint campus recruitment programme with ICICI Prudential here yesterday.

As many as 100 students of MBA (fourth semester) from different colleges appeared for various rounds of interviews. Students from GNIMT Ludhiana, Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Management, Moga, MIMIT Malout, GJIMT, Mohali, ICFAI National College, Patiala, Jammu, Yamuna Nagar, Ludhiana, Dehradun, Jalandhar, Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar, CMTR, Mohali and GNA-IMT, Phagwara, appeared for the interview.

Officials from ICICI bank came to screen the students. Rajan Sridhar, training and placement officer, GNIMT, said that the final results of interview would be declared later by company officials.

Women’s Day echoes with  anti-female foeticide sentiments

The Women Forum, in collaboration with the NSS Unit of the Government College for Women, celebrated International Women's Day in the college auditorium here today.

Prabhjot Kaur, principal of the college, and Narinder Sekhon, additional principal, attended the function while president of the Women Forum Neha Verma accorded a warm welcome to the guests.

A declamation contest was organised in which students presented their views on the topic, "Role of women in the society today." Puneet Soni (BA-I) was declared first, Harkiran BA-III and Pooja BA-II were awarded the second and third prizes, respectively.

The principal stressed on the importance of women empowerment in the society. She emphasised that female foeticide was a heinous crime and it should be stopped.

Members of the Women Forum were felicitated with certificates. Following students were honoured on the occasion: Neha Verma BA-III, Rajinder BA-II, Nishi BA-II, 
Romil Preet Grewal BA-III,  Harkiran Kaur BA-III, Priyanka Malik BA-III, Ginny B. Sc II, Pallavi Modi BA-II, Roopika BA-III, Amarjeet BA-III, Pooja BA-II and  Prichi BA-II.

Dr Mohinder Kaur, Viney Sharma (Incharge, Women Forum), Parveen, Harjit Kaur (Incharge NSS), Bajaj, Sushma Gupta, Usha Awasthi  were also present .

Women's Day  celebrated

A brief but dignified programme was organised to mark the international Women's Day in Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women in the college premises.

A panel discussion by the faculty and students, mellifluous rendering of self-composed poems on the killing of unknown female foetuses, melodious and heart rending song by Prof Hema Sharma, a captivating ballet portraying atrocities on women were some of the highlights of the occasion.

In the panel discussion on the deplorable practice of female-foeticide, Dr Manjit Kaur Sahota urged the youngsters to contribute their mite in curbing this menace and initiate a thought provoking process towards ushering in healthy and harmonious society based on gender-equality.

Students observe Women's Day

The department of early childhood care and education celebrated International Women's Day by organizing a seminar.

Poonam Mahajan, principal, First Step School, and Dr Harinder Singh, head. department of pediatrics, GTB Hospital were the resource persons.

The honourable guests were accorded a very warm welcome by the principal Harmit Kaur.

Poonam Mahajan delivered a lecture on "Puppetry as a Vocation" and demonstrated a puppet show. Dr Harinder Singh delivered a lecture on "Need of Health care for Women." While addressing the students, Poonam said that the art of puppetry could be chosen as a profession by women.

Dr Harinder Singh said a child should be given nutritious diet since his infancy to adolescence, as it was a crucial period of mental as well as physical development.

He said that the major reason of heart troubles in young age was to be attributed to the excessive consumption of cold drinks and junk food.

The commerce department of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town organized a  farewell party here today to bid  adieu to the students of B.Com-IIIrd year.

A variety of colourful items such as classical dance, were the main attractions of the day. The highlight of this gala show was Ms Farewell contest which was a true test of beauty  and brains.

There was an overwhelming response and as many as 56 students of B Com-III walked the ramp. Navneet Kaur was crowned Ms Farewell 2007, Jasmine bagged the title of Ms Charming, Harpreet Kaur was adjudged Ms Glory while Ms Best apparel title was claimed by Harneet Kaur. Other winners were Preeti Kohli - Ms Personality and Shivneet - Ms Catwalk.

Giddha team honoured

Students of Mai Bhago College, Ramgarh, gave an excellent performance at the Suraj Kund crafts fair organised with the assistance of Haryana Tourism recently.

Nine students of the giddha team of the college, who participated in the show, were honoured by the principal. Team in charge Pardeep and Harman were also honoured on the occasion. — OC
