Mulayam moves SC in assets case
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, March 12
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today moved the Supreme Court for modification of its order on the CBI probe into his assets and instead sought a judicial inquiry alleging that the petition against him had been filed on behalf of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and CBI, under the UPA coalition, was not functioning “independently”.

Since the CBI has been directed by the court to submit its report to the Centre to take further action, Mulayam, in his petition filed in the Court Registry, submitted that in the wake of a “no-holds-barred” political battle going on between the Congress and his Samajwadi Party, the inquiry should be conducted by a retired judge of the Supreme Court or High Court.

He also sought modification of the order to the extent that the Income Tax Department be first directed to proceed with the inquiry and only after it had filed its report should an appropriate order for further action be issued.
