Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 13
Dr Akashdeep Singh, pulmonologist at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), attended the sixth International Symposium on Antimicrobial Agents and Resistance (ISAAR 2007), held in Singapore from March 7 to 9.

The theme of the meeting was “Antibiotic resistance - searching for solutions". The conference was attended by more than 1,500 specialists from more than 60 countries.

The bane of anti-microbial resistance has been felt worldwide and the need to find solutions has received the attention not only of clinicians and academics, but also governments and policy-makers.

According to Dr Akashdeep Singh, various topics which were discussed in the symposium included community-acquired pneumonia, difficult gram-negative infections, staphylococcal resistance, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, new antibiotics, fungal infections, paediatric infections, tropical infectious diseases, antibiotic control and regulation.

Dr Singh made a presentation on antibiotic use and misuse in the developing countries. He observed in his paper that people were pouring tons of antibiotics into their systems, often with no benefit, except to the manufacturers of antibiotics.

A recent study, he remarked, describing the quality of prescriptions in India, revealed that a quarter of the prescriptions included antibiotics.

DMCH introduces novel eye care
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 13
A newly-introduced treatment of Lucentis (Ranibizumab injection) in the vitreo-retinal services of the Department of Eye at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here, restored the vision of a 70-year old patient, who was brought to the hospital with the complaint of poor vision in both the eyes.

According to Dr Sumeet Chopra, assistant professor in the Eye Department at the DMCH, the patient was diagnosed with an age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) in the retina of both the eyes.

"ARMD," he said, "is increasingly becoming the most common cause of visual impairment in the elderly population as the longevity of life is increasing. In this disease, there is usually a progressive and irreversible damage to the macula in both the eyes.

“The macula is very small and highly sensitive part of the retina and is responsible for what we see straight in front of us, allowing us to see fine detail for activities such as reading and writing, as well as our ability to see colour."

The patient underwent treatment with a special laser called "photo dynamic therapy", and also received an injection of Lucentis (Ranibizumab) inside the eye, which was one and the only FDA-approved treatment specifically developed for the treatment of ARMD.

Dr Chopra claimed this was for the first time that Lucentis had been used in this region. It was a breakthrough treatment for patients suffering from ARMD.

With Lucentis, people suffering from macular degeneration might have their vision improved at least keeping it stable.

The patient, who was treated with laser and given Lucentis injection, was doing well and showing satisfactory progress, added Dr Chopra.

He stressed the need for regular retina check-up in all patients with diabetes, hypertension and those scheduled to undergo cataract surgery.
