PAU Kisan Mela to focus on ecology
Ludhiana March 15 Aulakh said that many ecological constraints currently prevailed in Punjab agriculture. The productivity of major crops had slowed down and the paddy-wheat system had started showing the signs of fatigue. The environmental crisis had eclipsed sustainability, livelihood and prosperity of the state, he pointed out. Aulakh said intensive cropping (cropping intensity 188%) had made the soils nutrient-deficient. Majority of the paddy residue (18mt) and wheat (3.9mt) was burnt in the fields posing a serious environmental threat to the state. Expressing concern over exhausting ground water aquifers, he lamented that serious imbalance had developed between the rate of water recharge and its withdrawal. Water table in the central districts fell at the rate of 54cms per year between 1993-2003, 69cms. in 2003-04 and rose to 74cms. in 2004-05. More than 10 per cent of centrifugal pumps in Central Punjab had become dysfunctional requiring replacement by submersible pumps. Aulakh remarked that shifting the date of plantation and sowing short duration varieties of rice could arrest decline in water table. Water could also be saved through diversification in favour of less water requiring crops. |
