Kisan Mela set for grand opening today
Ludhiana, March 16 Scientists and experts of the PAU along with a vast majority of staff members are ready to display their latest researches and techniques to farmers during the two-day mela. The department of horticulture will showcase methods for planting fruit trees, digging and filling of pits, systems of layout of orchards. New techniques of propagation of fruit plants will also be explained to the farmers. Virus free propagation of ber, citrus and guava in poly bags will be the other highlights of the horticulture department. A demonstration of improved methods of irrigation and information regarding the newly released varieties will also be provided. Techniques for the quality improvement of grapes and peach, processed fruit products and the sale of fruit plants will also be there. The department of vegetable crops will have photographic display of new varieties and hybrids of tomato, preserved samples of muskmelon, fresh samples of pea, potato, garlic, carrot and lettuce varieties. The department of floriculture and landscaping will show flower seed production, cut flowers, seasonal flowers, pot plants, dried flower etc. Diversification in bee-keeping and the mass production of bio-control agents will be the highlights of the department of entomology. Besides, the integrated management of insect-pests of crops and the safe use of pesticides will be at the disposal of the farmers. |

Surprise checks put arts colleges under scanner
Ludhiana, March 16 Inspection of all education colleges undertaken by PU revealed that a large number of education colleges did not even have a principal and well equipped buildings and laboratories. Majority of the faculty employed by them were on temporary basis and the quality of teaching was suffering as a result, says Prof Kapoor. Surprise checks would make private managements provide required basic infrastructure and faculty, according to Prof Kapoor. The private entrepreneurs, which entered the arena of education have failed to meet infrastructure norms, he added. |

give tips on career preparation Jagraon, March 16 Dr Parmajit Singh Kang, Project Officer, Centre for adult continuing education and extension, Punjab University, Chandigarh, Dr Anil Sarwal, Prof B.K. Ghai and Namrata Sharma were the resource persons. Principal Brahma Ved Sharma accorded the hon'ble guests a warm welcome. Ghai apprised the students of various skills like eye contact, body language and body movements to make the communication more effective. Namrata Sharma threw light on the ways of writing curriculum Vitae to make it more attractive and meaningful. She gave useful tips to the students on making curriculum vitae at the right time. How to face 'Interview' was another important issue discussed in the workshop by Dr Anil Sarwal. He quite beautifully conglomerated the art and science of communication with the art of facing interview. An interactive session was held in
which various queries of the students were satisfactorily answered The

Seminar on renewable energy A seminar on renewable energy was held at the Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology on Wednesday. It was organised by the Renewable Energy Club of the college. Lecturer in automobile engineering Sukhraj Singh spoke about renewable energy and stressed on solar energy. The conversion of solar energy into electrical energy was discussed with the details of procedures. He explained the needs, merits and uses of solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, hydel energy, biomass energy. Warm adieu Students of BA, B.Com, BCA II of SDP College for Women, Ludhiana, organised a warm farewell for the outgoing students. A gala audio-visual feast was presented by the students of second and third years together. The students spent afternoon in fun and frolic with dances, songs and other such thrilling items. The show was presented by the students of BA, B.Com final wearing ethnic attires and traditional and modern jewellery. Meena of BA III won the Miss SDP title. Gurvinderjeet Kaur, Mansi and Shaveta were the judges. She further exhorted the outgoing students to have a clear cut vision before joining any field. President of the SDP Sabha Balraj Bhasin also sent his heartiest wishes and heartfelt blessings to the outgoing students. |

felicitated at annual convocation Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 16 More than 300 students were felicitated for their distinguished performance in academic and extracurricular fields. As many as 111 students received degrees in BA and BCA. Addressing the function Dr S S Bahri, registrar and Dr S M Kant director youth welfare department, Panjab University claimed that countries like USA and Canada had achieved targeted development on the basis of quality of higher education and technological advancement. However, India possessing vast natural resources lagged behind even the poor countries. “To achieve level of development as
dreamt by our President Dr Abdul Kalam we will have to revise our
priorities and focus our attention to improving our standards of
education in general and in higher education in particular,” Dr Kant
and Dr Bahri said. Reading the progress report of the college Dr P K Growl principal claimed the institute had played a significant role in enabling rural girls get higher education at their door step. She applauded the staff of the college for inspiring students in exhibiting talent in various spheres. |

pins hope on Upinderjit Doraha, March 16 In a joint press note, Dr R.S. Brar, former President, PCCTU, Dr Kuldeep Singh, area secretary of the union for Panjab University, Prof Manjit Komal, president, Ludhiana district, and Parkash Verma, woman convener for Panjab University, said the union was eagerly looking forward toward the al fulfilment of their long pending demands of the restoration of 95 per cent grant-in-aid scheme, release of pension-cum-gratuity and the lifting of ban on recruitment. Dr Kuldeep Singh said the recent statement of Upinderjit Kaur about the filling of 45,000 vacant posts in schools was being seen as a positive step toward the reformation of education system in the state. He said with such a reformatory step the day was not far when the ban on recruitment on the posts of lecturers would also be permanently lifted. Also with the finance minister focusing mainly on health and education, the union was hopeful of getting assured financial benefits. |

PAU signs
MoU for AIDS project Ludhiana March 16 The activities will be carried out through the active participation of National Service Scheme Organisation and the extension services of the PAU. The Director Students' Welfare, PAU, Dr. Tejwant Singh, and Programme Coordinator, NSS, Dr. K.S. Verma, have been nominated as the Projector Director and Project Coordinator, respectively. The working group from PAU will include eight project programme officers, namely Dr. Harnek Singh, Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Dr.D.S.Dhillon, Dr. Kuldip Kumar, Dr. Sandeep Singh, Dr. T.K. Gill, Dr. Sarita Saini and Dr. Rohinish Khurana. A five-member working group from USA comprising Dr. Omar Bagasra (principal investigator), Dr. Donald G. Pace, Dr. Peggy Ratliff, Dr. H.S. Grewal and Mrs. Theresa Bagasra visited PAU thrice and observed the on-going AIDS awareness activities carried out by the NSS volunteers in the adopted villages Talwandi Kalan, Swaddi and Talwandi Khurd through rallies, posters and skit play in village schools during the special camps. According to Dr.K.S.Verma, Programme Coordinator, NSS, the masses will be made aware of HIV/AIDS through personal interaction, display material and distribution of the relevant literature at a special stall during the Kisan Mela on March 17-18, 2007. Krishi Vigyan Kendras will also be engaged in the campaign. |
Jalandhar eves, city men, win b'ball titles
Ludhiana, March 16 This was academy's third consecutive title victory. For the academy, the main scorers were Gagandeep Singh (41), Dilawar Singh (32) and Sukhbir (14). For Ludhiana, Fatehjit Singh (44) and Taranjeet Singh (29) fought well. Patiala, with two wins and one defeat, finished runner-up, while Ludhiana came third. In the women's section, Jalandhar overcame stiff resistance from the hosts Ludhiana whom they overpowered 77-64 to clinch the title. For Jalandhar, Jyoti Sharma excelled with 24 points. Other notable contributors were Saloni and Manjinder who netted 17 and 13 points, respectively. For the losers, Ludhiana eves finished second and Nawanshahr secured third position. |
