500 patients examined

Ludhiana, March 18
More than 500 patients were examined and free medicines distributed to them at a medical check up camp, organised at Rattan Multispeciality Hospital here today.

A team of doctors comprising Dr Gagandeep S. Sachdeva (orthopedics), Dr Gaurav Mittal (pediatrics), Dr V.P. Dhand (medicine) and Dr Nancy Jindal (dental) conducted the check up of patients in their respective specialities. Besides free check up of the patients, all basic investigation and bone mineral density tests were done free of cost.

According to Dr Amarjit Singh Rattan (gynecologist) and medical director of the hospital, those present at the camp were educated on dental hygiene, presentation of minor injuries, feeding to small babies. — OC

IA men register 5-2 win

Title holders Indian Airlines, Delhi fought back valiantly to register a 5-2 win over EME, Jalandhar to begin their campaign on a sound note in the 4th All India Guru Gobind Singh Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, organised jointly by the Ludhiana Sportsmen Welfare Association and PAU Hockey Club under the patronage of the Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council, at the Prithipal Singh Astro Turf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University here today.

The match got off to a brisk start with EME Jalandhar players weaving good moves. Their repeated attempts to pierce through the Indian Airlines defense resulted in two penalty corners but they failed to capitalise on these opportunities.

Indian Airlines players drew the first blood in the 18th minute through a field goal scored by Usaf-Ur-Rehman. However, their joys were short lived as Kamaljit Singh of EME, Jalandhar scored the equaliser in the 24th minute. With few seconds to go for the lemon break, they went ahead and skipper, A K Bhatti sounded the board to make it read it 2-1.

In the second session, Indian Airlines men reorganised themselves and exhorted full pressure on their rivals. These tactics bore fruit as they restored the parity immediately through Brajan Singh.

In the 45th minute, Usaf-Ur-Rehman struck again to put his team in the lead at 3 goals to 2. S Michael and Kulubhushan scored in the 56th and 58th minute, respectively which sealed the Jalandhar team’s fate at 5-2.

Earlier, in the inaugural match of the tournament, Air India XI, Delhi outplayed PSEB XI, Patiala 3-1. All the goals were scored in the first half of the match.

Gaurav, Gurbax Singh and Joga Singh contributed one goal each for Air India XI while Balwinder Singh was the lone scorer for the losing side.

Hira Singh Gabria, Punjab cabinet minister inaugurated the five-day tournament in which six teams are vying for the top honours. Olympian Hardeep Singh Grewal, Ramandeep Singh Grewal, deputy director, sports, PAU, Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, Amrik Singh Minhas, AjayPal Singh and Ajaypal Singh were present at the inaugural function. Jatinder Singh Malhi, a local coloniser and a sports organiser, announced a grant of Rs 25,000 for the Ludhiana Sportsmen Welfare Association.

Tomorrow's fixtures: Namdhari XI vs EME, Jalandhar at 1 pm, Sikh Regiment, Delhi vs PSEB, Patiala at 3 pm.
