Blood donation by farmers — to make a point

Chandigarh, March 22
To highlight their demand for partnership in development projects of the Chandigarh Administration, the Pind Bachao Committee has announced to hold a blood donation camp at Kishangarh near the IT Park tomorrow on the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

The camp will be attended by sarpanches and landowners of all villages. The slogan of the farmers is : “ No to land acquisition, yes to self- development.”

Book exhibition at PGI

The exhibition, displaying the latest medical books on almost all subjects, will continue till Saturday.

Easy win for Maruti club

Riding high on three goals by striker Saurabh Singh, Maruti Football Club thrashed Football Club, Mauli Jagran, 6-0 on the opening day of the Chandigarh Senior Football Championship for Chaudhary Jarnail Singh Memorial Trophy, which started at Football Stadium, Sector 17, here today.

The first goal came in the 11th minute through Saurabh. After missing two chances, Saurabh again struck in the 18th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Balihar Singh, Sabir Negi and Eesh scored a goal each.

In another match, Young Football Club, Sector 21, registered a 3-0 victory over MES Football Club.

The match was full of action as Jaideep Singh (Young club) and Vinay (MES club) were shown red cards in the 18th minute for exchanging blows.

Tariq scored the first goal in the 46th minute. The other goals came through Amrinder (48th min) and Daljit Singh (54th min).

Sabreena stages comeback to lift title

Pankaj Kumar, Raghav Singal and Sabreena Gill emerged champions in their respective categories in the third L.D. Kapoor Memorial YMCA Total Tennis Championship which concluded at YMCA Total Tennis Academy, Sector 11, here today.

In the boys under-16 category, Raghav Singal of Total Tennis Academy beat Nishchay Rawal, a student of St Anne’s School, in straight sets at 6-1, 6-4. Raghav won the first three games in the set to clinch the first set 6-1. In the second set, Nishchay led by 3-0 but Raghav fought back and took the set 6-4.

In the boys u-14 category, Pankaj Kumar clinched the title beating Digvijay Singh 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in a well-contested match.

While the girl u-12 final match, Sabreena Gill defeated Nandini Sharma 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Utkarsh Khosla, a student of St Anne’s School, was declared most promising player of the championship.

City lad brings laurels

Budding local tennis player Parul Verma brought laurels to the city by finishing runners-up in the ITF Grade IV Doubles Tournament held at Malaysia from March 14 to 18.

Parul, who was paired with David Nguyen from USA, moved into the quarterfinals beating Chen (Taioei) and Dell-orto (Hongkong) 7-6 (5), 7-6(5).

The duo got the better of Chee (Malaysia) and Grant Ive (Republic of South Africa) 7-6 (2), 6-3, to reserve a berth in the semifinals.

Continuing their winning spree, the pair registered victory over Wang (Taipei) and Wee (Singapore) 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, in a well-contested semifinal match.

But it was the Indonesian pair of Hutauruk and Turmomo, which put a brake on the juggernaut of the pair of Parul and David beating them 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4) to lift the trophy.

Parul, who studies in standard XII of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, is a product of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association.

Aman Kaur won the first position in 100m race during the 26th annual Sports Day celebrated by the Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36-B, on the college premises, here, today.

The function started with a march past by students. Various events like long jump, sack race, three-legged race etc were organised to mark the event.

Thapa first Indian Choi Kwang Do master

Martial art trainer Bikram S. Thapa has become the first master of Choi Kwang Do martial art as he cleared the test for his 5th degree black belt test held at Georgia (Atlanta), USA, recently.

“The three-day test was held under the supervision of grand master Kwang, Jo Choi, who is the founder-president of Choi Kwang do Martial Art International. A seminar was also held there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the art,” Thapa said.

Master Thapa, who is also a chief instructor and examiner of the art, has been imparting training to budding martial art trainees at Sector 16, Panchkula.

About the exercises of the art, Master Thapa said, “Self-defence, along with physical fitness, is the main objective of the art. Apart from these, the exercises not only regulate blood pressure and cholesterol level, but also check obesity and diabetes”.

Cricket trials on March 24

Trials to select Chandigarh district under-13 and under-15 cricket teams will be held on March 24 at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, at 3 pm here.

The team will represent the city in the Haryana State Inter-District Cricket tournament, said Surinder Singh Baijee, general secretary, Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to Haryana Cricket Association).

Players born on or after September 1, 1994 are eligible to participate for the under-13 trials while players born on or after September 1, 1992 can participate for under-15 trials.

U-15 cricket trials

Trials to select the Chandigarh District Cricket Team for Under-15 age group will be held on March 28 at 3 pm at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, here. Only those players, who born after August 31, 1992, are eligible.

The selected team will participate in the Punjab Inter-District Tournament from which the Punjab state team will be selected for the Inter-State Championship.

Veterans’ athletics meet postponed

The 10th veterans’ athletics competition, which is being organised by the Senior Citizens (Pensioners) Council, has been postponed due to inclement weather.

General secretary Jai Singh Sehmbey said here today that the competition would not be held tomorrow. A suitable date for holding the event would be intimated later.

Team appointed

The Chandigarh administration has decided to appoint a team to visit the Industrial Area to look into details of conversion of one and two kanal plots.

“Small plot holders pointed out certain difficulties they were facing for conversions. We will depute senior architects to visit the area, deliberate the issue with the plot owners, and suggest measures,” a senior official of the administration said.
