Chandigarh, March 22 The first goal came in the 11th minute through Saurabh. After missing two chances, Saurabh again struck in the 18th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Balihar Singh, Sabir Negi and Eesh scored a goal each. In another match, Young Football Club, Sector 21, registered a 3-0 victory over MES Football Club. The match was full of action as Jaideep Singh (Young club) and Vinay (MES club) were shown red cards in the 18th minute for exchanging blows. Tariq scored the first goal in the 46th minute. The other goals came through Amrinder (48th min) and Daljit Singh (54th min). |

Sabreena stages comeback to lift title
Chandigarh, March 22 In the boys under-16 category, Raghav Singal of Total Tennis Academy beat Nishchay Rawal, a student of St Anne’s School, in straight sets at 6-1, 6-4. Raghav won the first three games in the set to clinch the first set 6-1. In the second set, Nishchay led by 3-0 but Raghav fought back and took the set 6-4. In the boys u-14 category, Pankaj Kumar clinched the title beating Digvijay Singh 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in a well-contested match. While the girl u-12 final match, Sabreena Gill defeated Nandini Sharma 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Utkarsh Khosla, a student of St Anne’s School, was declared most promising player of the championship. City lad brings laurels
Chandigarh, March 22 Parul, who was paired with David Nguyen from USA, moved into the quarterfinals beating Chen (Taioei) and Dell-orto (Hongkong) 7-6 (5), 7-6(5). The duo got the better of Chee (Malaysia) and Grant Ive (Republic of South Africa) 7-6 (2), 6-3, to reserve a berth in the semifinals. Continuing their winning spree, the pair registered victory over Wang (Taipei) and Wee (Singapore) 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, in a well-contested semifinal match. But it was the Indonesian pair of Hutauruk and Turmomo, which put a brake on the juggernaut of the pair of Parul and David beating them 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4) to lift the trophy. Parul, who studies in standard XII of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, is a product of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association. |

Thapa first Indian Choi Kwang Do master
Panchkula, March 22 “The three-day test was held under the supervision of grand master Kwang, Jo Choi, who is the founder-president of Choi Kwang do Martial Art International. A seminar was also held there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the art,” Thapa said. Master Thapa, who is also a chief instructor and examiner of the art, has been imparting training to budding martial art trainees at Sector 16, Panchkula. About the exercises of the art, Master Thapa said, “Self-defence, along with physical fitness, is the main objective of the art. Apart from these, the exercises not only regulate blood pressure and cholesterol level, but also check obesity and diabetes”. |

Cricket trials on March 24
Chandigarh, March 22 The team will represent the city in the Haryana State Inter-District Cricket tournament, said Surinder Singh Baijee, general secretary, Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to Haryana Cricket Association). Players born on or after September 1, 1994 are eligible to participate for the under-13 trials while players born on or after September 1, 1992 can participate for under-15 trials. U-15 cricket trials
Trials to select the Chandigarh District Cricket Team for Under-15 age group will be held on March 28 at 3 pm at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, here. Only those players, who born after August 31, 1992, are eligible. The selected team will participate in the Punjab Inter-District Tournament from which the Punjab state team will be selected for the Inter-State
Championship. |
