Tina clinches Medal of Medals title

Chandigarh, March 28
Tina Jain, who plays with a handicap of 34, clinched the medal of medals title returning a net score of 67 in the Lady's Captain Golf Tournament played on the greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

Irina Brar, who is just back from her first pro outing on the Asian circuit, gave the prizes to the medal of medals winners.

Lady Captain Pauline J.M. Singh said the medal of medals was a contest of all those ladies who had won or finished runner-up in the monthly medal rounds in the past 12 months.

Finishing at number two in the medal of medals contest was Kiran B.M. Singh (handicap 36) with a net card of 71. Pikka P. Singh finished third, followed by Pauline J.M. Singh (handicap 11) with a nett score of 74.

The other medal winners of the year finished in the following order: Binny Bath (76), Sheena Sekhon (76), Dalbir Sahi (77), Harinder Sandhu (77), Rima Dhillon (80), Vijay Wadhawan (81), Neelu Chopra (83).

There was a separate tournament played on the stableford format for those who did not figure among the monthly medal winners. Ekam J. Singh emerged the winner logging 39 points. Baljinder Mangat and Jaipreet Ghuman were bracketed second logging 37 points each. Gaitri M.M. Singh had 35 points.

2 city boys in u-18 national team

Two trainees of the Chandigarh Hockey Academy - Dharamvir and Rupinder Pal Singh - have made it to the under-18 Indian team.

The team will take on the top hockey teams of the country in the prestigious annual Bombay Hockey Gold Cup, scheduled from April 16 to 25 at Mumbai.

This is not the first time that these players have participated in a prestigious national event. The talented duo has cornered glory by participating in many top-level events as well as attending national camps.

Rupinder Pal Singh, a left full back, and Dharamvir, a right out forward, got a call to attend the national coaching camp at Bhopal last year. The camp was organised by the Indian Hockey Federation for the preparation of the Asia Cup.

Both players represented Punjab in the 62nd National Hockey Championship held at Amritsar. In the championship, Rupinder also was declared ‘best full back’.

Expressing happiness over the selection of his trainees in the national u-18 team, their coach Jasbir Bajwa said, “Both are very talented and promising players.”

TV show takes Mohali boy to County cricket

It was a big day for the son of a bus driver of local transport, who left his studies after Class XII for cricket, when he emerged winner in ‘Cricket Star’, a cricket talent hunt TV show by a big margin.

Twenty-year-old Sukhvir Happy Singh will get an opportunity to play for Leicestershire County Cricket as per the contract of the programme. He will also get a chance to hone his skills there and at the Cricket Star Academy under the guidance of renowned cricketer Robin Singh.

According to the organisers, over 25,000 applications from budding cricketers were received for the show. As many as 23 made it to the Cricket Star Academy out of whom the top 11 were selected on the basis of performance. After that, public votes were called through SMSs to elect the winner.

This fast bowler impressed the selectors from the very beginning with his in-swing and pace. ‘The Wisden Cricketer of the Millennium’ Kapil Dev was the chief selector in the programme.

“This is the biggest moment of my life and the first step toward my cricketing career. In England, my aim will be to learn more about fast bowling,” said Sukhvir Singh when he came home after winning the coveted title.

The parents of Sukhvir said, “All is in the hands of God, we hope that ‘Waheguru’ would fulfil the dreams of our son”. The family lives in a small village Shahpur near Mohali.

PEC win cricket tourney

Chandigarh, March 28
Punjab Engineering College (PEC) beat National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, by 23 runs in the final of the Inter- Engineering Deemed University tournament at NIT grounds, Hamirpur.

PEC scored 200 for 5 in 25 overs while NIT were all out for 177 runs. — TNS

Panel to look into direct recruitment

Chandigarh, March 28
The Chandigarh administration has constituted a screening committee under the chairmanship of home secretary, Chandigarh administration, to examine proposals related to the filling up of direct recruitment vacancies in different offices and departments of UT.

The other members of the committee are special secretary finance, joint secretary home, secretary of the concerned office or department and J.S Chadha, AFA (Personnel), ministry of home affairs, Government of India. The head of department of the concerned section will be the member secretary of the committee. — TNS
