Anti-rabies camp held

Samrala, March 28
The 2nd annual free anti-rabies camp organised by the Animal Husbandry Department was held at Ottalan, 3 km from Samrala today. Punjab State Veterinary Council arranged for the vaccination of around 200 dogs under Dr Baljit Singh Sidhu, president, Veterinary Council and Dr Vinod Gupta, registrar, Punjab State Veterinary Council. The camp was held under the guidance of Dr Paramjit Singh, deputy director, Animal Husbandry, Ludhiana.

The best bred pet competition was won by pet owners, Kulwinder Singh Kotla Masand, Bhinder Singh Ladhran, Balbir Singh, Amar Singh Rajewal, Rupinderjit Singh Samrala, Jhirmal Singh, DSP Khanna, Kuljit Singh Khanna, Swaran Singh Rajewal, Gurmukh Singh Purba and Hardev Singh Kang Khamanon.

Around 150 animals were examined in the camp. Maghar Singh, ADO Samrala, spoke on fodder management, Dr Ashok Sharma, SVO Samrala, about control of diseases and Dr Jagjit Singh Dawra about importance of vaccination in live stock.

Jagjiwan Singh Khernian, MLA Samrala, directed the employees to implement the policies at the village level so as to increase the income of farmers from their livestock. He also distributed prizes and certificates to the winners.

Information on nature cure at youth fest

Ludhiana March 28
Nature Cure Education Trust distributed literature on nature cure remedies like wheat grass juice, organic wheat, earthworm fertiliser and other organic fertilisers at the three-day inter-college youth festival cum competition held at the Government Polytechnic College for Girls, Rishi Nagar, recently.

S.R.Mittal of the Nature Cure Trust apprised students about Naturopathy by distributing charts and other material among them to create awareness on healthy living without medicines.

Mahatma Gandhi believed in this science and had the vision for a free India to follow it in every household, village panchayat, school and college, said Mittal. Books and CDs on nature cure were distributed among the students.

Forms to seek financial assistance from the National Institute of Naturopathy were also distributed to colleges so that colleges could apply to NIN Pune for organising programmes on the subject.

Function marks Tuberculosis Day

Mandi Gobindgarh, March 28
A panel discussion and poster-making competition was held on March 26, 2007 at Desh Bhagat School of Nursing, Mandi Gobindgarh under the guidance of Dr Zora Singh, chairman of Desh Bhagat Group of Institutes.

Principal Kuldeep Longia was the chief guest. Panel discussion started with introduction of the theme ‘TB anywhere is TB everywhere’. Seven members of the panel highlighted the epidemiology, causes, signs, symptoms and treatment of the disease.

Students staged a play on superstitions leading to spread of the disease. — OC

Health officials take samples of food items

Ludhiana, March 28
Under directions from civil surgeon and local health authority Yash Pal Singla, several teams of health staff took samples of milk, cheese and other food items at different places in the city today as a part of drive to check adulteration.

Dr Singla informed that milk and cheese samples had been taken from milk vendors, dairies, dhabas and posh hotels located on Haibowal Road, Pakhowal Road, G.T. Road (Delhi side) and Ludhiana-Chandigarh Road.

The health officials also seized samples of packed and loose spices from a couple of markets in the wake of adulterated spices being sold by certain shopkeepers.

According to Singla, the samples taken have been sent to government laboratory for analysis and stern action will be taken against the concerned persons if these were found to be adulterated or below standard.

‘Create awareness about drug addiction’

Ludhiana, March 28
Speakers at a seminar on awareness of HIV, AIDS and drug abuse emphasised the need to wean away youth from drug addiction, which was the main factor of increasing incidence of HIV and AIDS in the region.

The seminar was organised under the aegis of the UN office of Drugs and Crime, jointly by Dr D.N. Kotnis, and Sriyansh Nagar Welfare Society here today. Former councillor Ranjit Singh Dhillon inaugurated the seminar, which was presided over by president of the society Rakesh Rana and Dr B.K. Hira.

Stressing the need to effectively curb the menace of drug addiction among youth, Dr Hira and Rana urged the NGO’s and other social bodies to work unitedly to achieve the objective. They said that creating awareness about disastrous effects of drug abuse was the first step in this direction.

Speaking at the occasion, medical superintendent of the Kotnis Hospital Inderjit Singh informed that the hospital was running a drug de-addiction centre for the last 9 years and such educative and awareness programmes were organised regularly for the benefit of the people.

A five-member committee, headed by Ranjit Singh Dhillon was formed to chalk out further educative programmes and maintain an update on awareness level about drug addiction in the area. — OC
